Hammerfest Things to Do

  • Music Pavilion

The blue pavilion built by the local artists Eva and Knut Arnesen.I have never heard any music coming from that pavilion but all people are visiting it for it's position in the center of the city and for the (free) chance to meet the others.

Hammerfest is the northernmost town on earth ! Of course there are lots of villages on earth that are further north but Hammerfest is the northernmost TOWN ! All of the town looks very modern and there is a sad reason for that : In the very last days of WW II the german troups, who had occupied Hammerfest during the war, left this place and burned...

I was trying many times to find it opened. Only few days before my last trip in Hammerfest I have seen it…It was not so impressive as I was prepared but I was surprised about another element... the similitude of the carved and painted figures from the Romanian Merry Cemetery Sapantza. It is almost the same naïve hand like there… The author was the...

  • The best restaurant in the city

It seems to be a traditional restaurant and the best in the city. I have been there once and we have to choose from a lot of well done dishes. I have tried something with lamb which was delicious. One of my colegues was eating seal and we have all tried the seaguls eggs garnished with fish eggs.

Hammerfest does indeed have an airport (Airport Code: HFT). It is about a 10 minute drive from the town center. It is served by Widerøe Airlines, which provides multiple daily flights between Tromsø (TOS) and Kirkenes (KKN) stopping at several arctic villages along the way. There is no bus service to or from the airport, though taxi service is...

Hammerfest Warnings and Dangers

  • ALWAYS IN SUMMER CARRY MOSQUITO...

BODO .. Travelling anywhere up here in Northern Norway or LLapland ALWAYS in the summertime carry and use a strong mosquito and insect repellant...The mosquitos up here are the biggest that you will ever see!!! They are not only a real pest but mosquitos carry many forms of viruses.. In the evenings (the worst time) when "mossie's "are most active...

  • Stepping up the Zig-Zag-path

Stepping up the Zig-Zag-path is easy and not very exhausting, but at some places you really have to be very careful, where to step to and I would not recommend elderly people to take that path. For them one of the bustours that are organized by the cruiseships might be better, they take you the easy way to these viewpoints

Hammerfest Tourist Traps

  • Banjer'n Pub

Do not enter in this pub. It can be dangerous. You will find inside very dangerous species... and do not forgett that they are always drunk... very drunk. If you really love the risk be sure that you are guided by a local. He will know how to manage the situation. To cut your neck... by yourself.

The obvious tourist trap in the area is Nordkapp. You'll be charge about 100 NOK to see exactly the same thing you can see for free 20 metres away. I'm not even sure the fenced area is actually more to the north than the non-fenced one. It could be that they just fenced the area more convenient for them and claimed it to be the most northern....
