Neiden & Neiden river

by Gili_S

We pass through Neiden on our way to the most north east part of Norway. It is just after we left Finland and pass to Norway and not far from the Russian border as well. The nature in the area is beautiful.

Arran brochure, Kamøyvær

by Rusket

Kamøyvær is another fishing village, much easier to get to than Bergsfjord, since there is a road which is normally open. The road might close on short notice during winter, though. I was amazed to find such an active fishing village this far north when I visited Kamøyvær in 1983. As you can see from the map in the Arran brochure, the village is protected from the ocean by a fjord, giving the fishermen a snug harbour. The village is situated on Magerøya, a bit north of Honningsvåg. On my last Finnmark trip I did not have a camera, but I am currently going through my brothers slides, and will come back with my own (his) pictures later, he lived in this area in the 1980's, driving the tourist bus to North Cape.

Fishing villages

by Rusket

Visit one of the small fishing villages along the coastline. The depicted village is Bergsfjord in the municipality Loppa in south-western Finnmark, with 140 inhabitants. The only way to get there is by local boat from the community center Øksfjord. The fish factory which was recently bought by an icelandic company is now closed down.My parents, my sister and I visited Bergsfjord in july 1964. At that time my uncle was the head master of the local school. There were two classes: 1st - 4th grade and 5th to 7th grade. From the age of 14 kids had to go to Øksfjord to the boarding school there. Today there is kindergarten and 1st to 10th grade, meaning kids can stay with their parents until they are 16 years old.The linked page contains more pictures of Bergsfjord.
