What to pack for a winter cruise with Hurtigruten

by toonsarah

Although the less expensive cabins are small, you can store empty suitcases etc in a luggage room near the reception area, so you don’t have to worry about the size or number of your bags! But remember that storage in the cabins is limited, so don’t bring more than you think you’ll need. Day-time temperatures in coastal Finnmark in January are usually a few degrees below freezing, and lower still at night of course. You will need a warm top layer to combat the cold, especially if you plan to be out on deck much, as of course the movement of the ship and the open seas mean that the wind chill is considerable. Remember that if the Northern Lights appear, as they did on one evening of our trip, you will want to go out at night!Take shoes with good grips for the shore excursions. I also took my special grippers to strap on to my boots, but be careful not to wear these on the polished wooden...

Some tips

by Gili_S

If you planning hiking (in summer), not too heavy staff, distances are long it is nice to feel light as possible. You usually do not need to carry water with you. Good shoes is a must, good water proof or water resistant jacket is needed in the summer, it is raining almost every day here. At night it can get very cold, so be prepared. In the local stores and gas station you can buy mosquitoes repellent etc. You will surely need it in the summer. Do I need to mention anything? Take whatever you got, and remember, it can be very wet. Tents, good sleeping bags and the usual stuff. Camping is very popular here and there are lots of sites to stay over.

Arctic conditions

by Rusket

Good shoes and warm clothing is an excellent tip if you visit Finnmark in spring, summer or autumn. But should you want to explore Finnmark during the winter, especially inland, you must be prepared for arctic conditions, as temperatures can actually drop down to -50 C, -40C is not uncommon. Tour operators like the one linked below or this one: Nordic Safariwill often provide you with necessary equipment. Summer: Insect repellant!
