Extreme cold

by Rusket

Skiing in Finnmark could be spectacular. But unless you are specially prepared and trained for arctic conditions, I recommend you stay in the coastal areas like for instance Alta ski og alpinsenter, or do it in spring. Karasjok in inland Finnmark holds the official cold record of Norway, with minus 51.4 C. You need more than good shoes and warm clothes for that! The linked web page is in norwegian only! In 2005 their season lasted until 16 april. You can rent the neccesary equipment on site. NB! They close when temperatures drop below minus 18 C!

Water activities - for the hard-boiled only

by Rusket

Finnmark is definitely not the place to go if your main goal is to enjoy beach activities! On a warm summer day you might be tempted to take a quick dip, and shallow lakes might even be warmed up enough for you to enjoy it :-) I once took a bath in the dam shown on my second picture. The water comes from the glacier behind the dam, the water temperature was 8 C! I will never do it again!!My main picture shows the typical Finnmark shore, you can see from the vegetation that this is a cold area. After all, Finnmark is on the same latitude as Alaska, Grenland and Siberia! The only water activities I would recommend are the kinds that take place on a boat and / or include using a protective suit.

Saltwater fishing

by Rusket

Everybody, or at least their neighbour, on the Finnmark coast have a boat! In any smaller place just ask anybody, and they will either take you out fishing themselves or they know somebody who will. And you don't have to go far out to get fish. I caught my first fish, a cod of 2 kg on Lopphavet (Loppa Ocean) when I was 9 years old :-) My father caught this 9 kg pollock. A good idea to bring your own fishing rod, or other fishing equipment. And remember warm clothing, Finnmark can be cold even in summer.

Snow Mobile

I was here in the middle of the summer, no snow left, so I guess I need to visit one day in the winter to make some use for those lovely snow mobiles.
