By local boat or bus

by Rusket

Many villages and inhabited islands can only be reached by boat. Connex has now taken over much of the traffic in Finnmark, both by boat and bus.The picture shows one of the coastal express boats after having had some rough weather. The coastal express is still used by locals to travel within Finnmark, and for shipping goods.

Gas station

by Gili_S

If you drive from the Finnish Lapland, you better fill your tank before crossing the border to the Norwegian side and gas is cheaper in Finland. This is the gas station in Norway in between the mountains on the way to Hammerfest.

The bridges over the roads

by Gili_S

Because of the mountains and the fjords in some places you need to drive around the fjords even hundred kilometres just to the city you can see it already across the sea few kilometres away. In some places there are ferries across, but in modern times there are few beautiful bridges as this one on the way to Hammerfest.

A spectacular flight

by Rusket

On my third trip to Finnmark I travelled by air from Trondheim to Honningsvåg. The last part of the trip was spectacular! The airplane was a Widerøe Twin Otter, with as far as I can remember, 16 passanger seats. Since there was no pressure cabin we had to fly low, and followed roads and fjords left and right, and hills up and down. The only flight experience on the same level must be going by helicopter between gas and oil rigs in the North Sea and landing on buoys and ships, and the only flying experience that was ever better, was when I landed a plane myself at Sola airport Stavanger in 1989 :-)There are 12 airports in Finnmark, the larger traficked by SAS/Braathens, the smaller by Widerøe (SAS is the major stock holder) who now use DASH 8. Since distances in Finnmark are long, it is quite common to go by air even within the county.

The Coastal Express

by Rusket

The Coastal express is a great way of travelling both to and around Finnmark! I have made a travelogue about my second trip to Finnmark by Hurtigruten in 1970The new ships are modern and comfortable, many tourists do the whole trip Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen as a cruise, or they go by boat one way and fly the other. But the ships are still used for transportation of goods as well as for local travelling between destinations along the coast.

By boat

We got all the way up north from Helsinki in a few days by driving, it is a long ride, but in the end, when you arrive and see such view, you know it was all worth it

Tunnel

by Gili_S

... and the same here, because of the mountains and the fjords in some places you need to drive thorough the tunnel to avoid mountain climbing.

Just drive

by Gili_S

The best way to hang around here is to drive your own car, then you can just stop where ever you want. Just be prepared for any kind of weather, even on July as in the photo here.

Ferry

by Cristian_Uluru

If you want to see the Lyngen Alps you must take two ferries: the one from Breivikeidet to Svensby, the other one from Lyngseidet-Olderdalen.
