Top Finnmark hotels
One of the best things you can see in the Finnmark Region are the reindeers!!! I found lot of them along the road E69 toward NordKapp. There are a lot of them on the borders of the road and sometimes they cross it suddently, so you must pay attention when you seen them!!!
Summers in Finnmark are short and intense. I was lucky on all my three visits, the weather was nice with temperatures up to and above 20 C. But the weather might be rough. The old church in Bergsfjord blew into the ocean during a storm, thus the new one is stayed up with steel wires!Picture 4 shows houses in a winter storm, picture 5 a roof blown off a building.
Roads can be closed on short notice, and not only in mid winter! (Pic 2) All you might see of a road is the sign posts! But as you see from the other pictures, they are very efficient in clearing roads of snow.
Take care when driving across Finnmarksvidda, or for that sake on other Finnmark roads, not to hit reindeers. Especially in winter, when it is easier for them to walk on the road than in the deep snow.The males might get agressive during the mating season like any other male animals, a finnish VT member recently told me about a couple of incidents in Finnish Lappland where people had been attacked.
If you are going hiking and / or fishing on Finnmarksvidda, be sure to bring enough insect repellant. The moscitos are HUGE, and there are millions of them. I once stopped to let two friends of mine out of the car, and left the car door open while we were checking the map (had to make sure where to send the rescue team if they went lost on their hike!). I spent half an hour killing moscitos before I could start driving afterwards!
Be careful driving on the roads, there are often reindeers and sometimes even cows or sheep hanging on the roads.
Even that it was July, and it was warm, I was with shorts and sandals, but when you drive over the mountains be prepared for anything, as I got into this storm.
