I have been in Norway many times but I remember most 3 summers sailing in south of Norway. Absolutely most beautiful place I have been with sailing boat. So many nice fjords and very special small harbours.

I will bring that someone to Bergen.
Fjord Cruise.

If you're travelling to Norway, I suggest you take a whole range of clothing, no matter what time of year it is. It seems their weather patterns are unpredictable, to say the least! We arrived in May, to find the airport under a blanket of snow! It was freezing cold the entire time we were there (just as well I packed a hat and gloves!), even though the sun sometimes shone as though it were a beautiful summer's day. Between these sunny periods the heavens would open and we'd get soaked through, though the locals don't seem to be at all concerned about rain. None of them seem own umbrellas! Make sure you take your own, just in case! Leave a Comment

Many people ask me about the Islamic wave in Norway, and several VT'ers have noticed many Moslems in Norway, too. First, there is no Islamic wave, second, you cannot really see if a person is Moslem? Third, the influx of immigrants has by and large been an enrichment to Norway's culture and economy ever since the early Pakistani (Punjab) settlers came here in the early '70es. The last two summers I have noticed the large number of white girls who have taken to the Punjabi shalwar kameez as a fashion statement. There are 80.000 decleared or in any way by creed and own written statement recognized Moslems in Norway. These are divided in many nationalities and no less than 89 different religious societies. Many asylum seekers and immigrants tend to come from Islam-oriented countries (but the biggest single immigrant group is American!), and they throng to Oslo. So the visible impression in parts of Oslo may be of a great many immigrants, including some wearing hijab - or baseball cap??? It is hard to say whether racism is on the increase or decrease in Norway. Foreigners generally have a hard time becoming part of mainstream Norwegian society, and perhaps there is no desire to do so either, and certainly it isn't easy to get a job and friends. And skin color is part of that drama. There is certainly a strong degree of nationalism here, but it doesn't necessarily link up with puritanistic racism. However, there is a strain of political nationalism that go full circle on the conservative side and blooms into full-scale racism. Anti-racism work in Norway will have to beat that political strain before declearing any level of success. The kitchen-table racism vanishes once an "original" Norwegian involves himself or herself in friendships and other socializing with our new country fellows. It may take still some time... My 2 teens and I, (their 52 yr. young mother), just spent a month in Norway and Sweden with our rental car. We enjoyed all the hostels and B&B, and hotels. Loved the hike to the waterfall above Flaam. The camping cabin was a wonderful experience. If sleeping in hostels: family rooms are great, bring your pillow, sheets and blanket, : then buy a set of dishes, cups, flatware, & pan at a local store (your souviners!). The car ferries are worth the money. You don't have to drive the boat (avoiding hours on narrow roads). I did live in Norway over 20 years ago. Some has changed, but the best part remains. Enjoy the weather. We saw Bergen in the rain. Weather has never stopped me. It's just a great opportunity for fantastic, one-of-a-kind pictures and adventures. I LOVE driving a vehicle in Norway and Sweden. I've done it in all types of weather and seasons. Just remember, you CAN"t go fast. It's a LONG drive from Tonsberg to Stavanger. But fantastic scenery and so different from western Norway. We ate all but 3 meals (in our car, hostel, picnic,) from food we bought from local grocery stores. SO FUN to shop in them. Just remember: no USA debt cards will work in the grocery store, ; However, regular VISA credit cards work almost everywhere. Bring cash. ATM's are everywhere. We munched our way across the 2 countries visiting family and friends. Ha Det Bra!

Nordic Mythology was the pagan religion practiced in the Nordic countries untill the vikings were chritianed. Generally it was the same as the germanic tribes. There were several gods, all with special powers. Odin (Swedes call him Oden) were the principal god and the wisest of them all. He was the god that gave life to the humans. He was married to Frigg, and had a son Tor. Tor was a strong god and a god of war. His hammer (Mj?lner) always came back to him when he threw it. He was the god that created thunder. Tyr was the bravest of them all. Like Tor he was a god of war, but was more strategic then the brutal Tor. Loke was the god that always tried to outfox everyone. You cannot trust him, and you didn't always know if he was good or bad. Frej: Godess of love. Brage: The poets god. Brage was the god of justice. Ironicly enough killed by an arrow shot by the blind H?der after being persuaded to fire the arrow by Loke. Njord: Fertilitygod with power over the weather. Some other characters to wach out for: Hel: Godess of Hell, Fenris: The wolf to be released on Ragnarokk, Nordic Mythologys version of Armagheddon. Midgardsormen: Monster in the sea in the shape of a giant Serpent.
The gods were not all the same type of gods. There were of theese kinds: Asa, Vaner, Norner, Alf (Elves), Valkyrier, Jotner (Giants), Dverger (Dwarfs) Leave a Comment

Not exactly my favourite thing to do, this, but sometimes you will need that darn vaccination sting in the arm... If you need to replenish your vaccines for onward travels or whatever related to travel-induced illness or prophylaxis, the outfit Reiseklinikken does a good job to help you. These folks are active travellers themselves, good English speakers and love to scare you by terrible stories and funny anecdotes (if time). This is where I get most of my travel health advice from (directly and their web pages) and where I get punctured. It's a private clinic, so there is a fee to be paid regardless of nationality. The fee per vaccine varies by the cost to the vaccine producer/importer, and about 10 USD per actual injection done by Reiseklinikken. They can do the whole range of things (see web pages). On acute travel related diseases you may consult them also, but in severe cases they will probably forward you to a specialist in the relevant public hospital. While a regular hospital visit will result in an aspirine against malaria or bilharzia, the Reiseklinikken will know what the stuff is about. And bring a travel insurance - that will help if you're really in need for some sort of treatment. Located in central Oslo, so it's easy to find them. Note that there are a few other private clinics around, too, and that every municipality has a health service that will give you the same vaccines, but it will be more cumbersone and more time consuming and they may not have the vaccine in questions, so you will have to wait some days for them to obtain it etc. Call for an appointment before you visit Reiseklinikken. Phone/fax: +47 22111198/97 Address: St. Olav's Plass No 3, 0165 Oslo. www.reiseklinikken.com Leave a Comment

Oslo, Hardanger Vidda, Trollstig, Lofoten, Hinnøya, Finnmark. Northcape is mandatory, however the 'real' Northcape is a bit south, takes 4 hours of walking. If you spend your money on Northcape (it is not for free ), go to the cinema an watch Ivo Caprino's movie taken by 5 parallel cameras. A real eye-catcher, but don't get seasick :)
