Constitution day
National Costumes from Norway - Norway
National Costumes from Norway

Send Photo to a Friend
If you can choose which day to be in Norway out of every day of the year: Choose May 17th. "17. Mai" is our constitution day, and widely celebrated.

The day starts with the flag being raised. There will be organized marches where everyone is welcome to participate. Bands will be leading the parade, Schoolclasses will be marching after them. In most cities there are Borgertog: Parades where different groups show what they are good at, or ordinary people just go for fun. The tourist offices should help you to find their route.

Do not forget to take pictures of all the national costumes. You can (if you're good) tell where the person comes from just by looking at the costume.

Sagasøyla , Elveseter , Bøverdalen.
If you drive west from Lom towards Luster in Sogn og Fjordane , you will find this monument in Bøverdalen . The Sagasøyla by Elveseter in Bøverdalen was raised in 1992 and represent the history of Norway from the time the country was united in 872 until the first national assembly convened in 1814.

Kristiansand
Kristiansand is a relative small town about 300 km south of Oslo. The great family atraction there is the Zoo wich is a little more than just a zoo. It's called "Kristiansand dyrepark" and has a great variety of animals. But it also has an amusement park zone with some very fun activities. There is also a pirate town there where you can take a trip on a "real" pirate ship. There is a water world with some swimming pools where you can spend hot summer days. And so on and on.
The highlight of it all is a town which they have built to fit a story written by Thorbj?rn Egner called "Kardemomme by". It is a famous tail in the Scandinavian countries and tels the story of three robers and the townfolks of Kardemomme wich they harass. For childre wich know this story this is direct hit. Three or four times each day the play is performed there in the town. If you are interestet to see the play you should start by checking when it runs so that you can plan your day. Our first time there we didn't know of the play and mist it but the second time we knew of it and it was worth the while.
This park has a lot to offer and I have not mentiones nearly everything not to spoil the surprice factor.

Lillehammer
Lillehammer is an ex-winter olympic town but there is more to him than that.
Near by there is a family park called "Hunderfossen" wich offers a varaity of entertainment for young and old, mostly young thou. ( http://www.hunderfossen.no )
There is a Roadmuseum there which is serves good for everyone interestet in cars and other vehicles and how they get about.
Just outside the town there is a place called "Lilleputthammer" where a part of the town is build in miniature houses. It's a fun thing to see if you are going by.
And then of course there are the olympic atractions. I strongly recomend the bobsledride. You can go down the original olympic bobsledtrack on a socalled "hjulbob" during sommertime. It's a bobseld with wheels but you reach a speed of over 100 km/h. The problem is that it's quiet expensive . ( http://www.lillehammer.de/hjulbob.htm )
One more thing I noticed when I last was there, but that was in the sommer of '94, was that there was a climbing wall in one of the iceskating hall. I have no idea if it's there anymore.

Prices...
Norway is a very expencive country!

But there is no need to make it more expencive than you have to. Here are a few advices on how to keep the costs down:

- Alcohol and tobacco:
Don't buy it here! Bring it with you if you can. One packet with 20 cigarettes costs more here than a carton with 200 in Spain, and in other countries it's even cheaper, so bringing it along will save you lots of money. You could even sell it to us and make a bit of money... ;)

- Stores:
There are many different kinds of supermarkets, but there is one general rule; big chains like Ica, Kiwi, Rimi, Rema 1000, Coop, Bunnpris and so on, are normally cheapest. Kiosks like Narvesen, Mix, 7-eleven and many others are more expencive, but open longer.

Check out the many foreign stores too. They are many places in the big cities. Here you can find lots of more exotic things, and most of them are a lot cheaper than in other places. Especially fruits and vegetables!

- Attractions
There are many attractions which are free, so don't be frustrated if you don't have any more money. Some of these places in Oslo are: Akershus fortress, Vigelandspark (a must-see anyway!), Astrup Fearnley Museum of modern art, Armed Forces museum, Botanical garden, Medievalruins (Gamlebyen), National Gallery, Oslo Cathedral, Parliament and many more.

- Transportation:
First of all; buy your ticket before going on board, as it costs more from the driver. You can save lots of money on buying one of the many cards which gives you free transportation, free entrance to museums and much more. Also remember that a ticket is valid for one hour after you bought or stamped it. In this hour you can travel as much as you like. Tickets are valid on all buses, trams, metros and ferries in Oslo.

- Eating and drinking:
You can find everything you want; from the cheapest to the most expencive. More expencive don't necessarily mean better quality...
