Prices...

by Maria_75

Norway is a very expencive country! But there is no need to make it more expencive than you have to. Here are a few advices on how to keep the costs down:- Alcohol and tobacco:Don't buy it here! Bring it with you if you can. One packet with 20 cigarettes costs more here than a carton with 200 in Spain, and in other countries it's even cheaper, so bringing it along will save you lots of money. You could even sell it to us and make a bit of money... ;)- Stores:There are many different kinds of supermarkets, but there is one general rule; big chains like Ica, Kiwi, Rimi, Rema 1000, Coop, Bunnpris and so on, are normally cheapest. Kiosks like Narvesen, Mix, 7-eleven and many others are more expencive, but open longer.Check out the many foreign stores too. They are many places in the big cities. Here you can find lots of more exotic things, and most of them are a lot cheaper than in other...

Birdwatching

by DanielF

Even if the resources have dramatically fallen because of overfisihing, the North Atlantic is still rich enough in fish to sustain large sea bird colonies. There are many towns and fishing villages where you can arrange an excursion to visit one of this fascinating places full of life and sound.

Northern Norway

by DanielF

This is a typical Northern Norwegian landscape: solitude, harmony and calm. Nature remains untouched at a vast extense and it is as impressive as in the South, although you will not find here high mountains along the fjords.

Poor tourist facilities

by DanielF

Norway is a rich country and its economy does not rely on tourism. That is probably the reason why we perceived in a number of occasions that the quality of the service in the hotel industry could be improved.

Hurtigruten: Meeting the MS Narvik

by travelfrosch

Day 3: We've headed even further north, having just passed Mehamn, the northernmost port of call for the coastal steamer. As we were entering Berlevåg harbor, we ran across yet another southbound steamer, this time the MS Narvik. The weather had cleared, affording some excellent photos.

Hurtigruten: Midnight Sun!

by travelfrosch

Day 3: The weather had cleared, so we got an excellent view of the Midnight Sun. At 71 degrees North, it was surprisingly high in the sky. This was probably the most unobstructed view of the Midnight Sun we got on the entire trip.

Hurtigruten: Meeting the MS Polarlys

by travelfrosch

As you probably realize by now, a coastal steamer meets quite a few sister ships traveling in the opposite direction. This time, it's the MS Polarlys, just north of Hammerfest enroute to the North Cape. It's cloudy, but the scenery is still spectacular, as is the ship we're passing.

Hurtigruten: Midnight Rainbow!

by travelfrosch

Day 2: We stayed up til midnight again, hoping to see the Midnight Sun (the real one, this time). At first, it didn't look too promising, as it was raining at 11:30. But then the rain stopped and the sun came out just before midnight. Sara and I are both meteorologists, so we knew exactly where to look for a rainbow (directly opposite the sun). We got up and headed to the stern of the ship immediately! Would we see the rainbow? Yes, indeed! What a beautiful sight -- and our second Midnight Rainbow of the trip!

Tip Photo
Hurtigruten: Meeting the MS Midnatsol

by travelfrosch

Day 2: No luck getting the Midnight Sun last night, but we do get to see the Midnightsun for sure tonight! The MS Midnatsol, that is. The MS Nordnorge is quite a new ship, with excellent amenities. But the MS Midnatsol is of the newest generation (at least until the MS Fram joins the fleet in 2007). What a gorgeous ship! The scenery ain't bad, either... 8)
