Hurtigruten: Waiting for the Midnight Sun

by travelfrosch

Day 1: After our encounter with the Trollefjord, the MS Lofoten, and the MS Nordkapp, we stayed on deck. We were well north of the Arctic Circle, so we stayed awake eagerly awaiting our chance to see the Midnight Sun. Tonight, it was cloudy, so we didn't get our wish. The views were quite nice anyway.

Hurtigruten: Meeting the MS Lofoten

by travelfrosch

The MS Lofoten, the oldest ship in the Hurtigruten fleet, was on a special voyage around the Trollefjord, an especially scenic fjord just north of Svolvær. Our ship arranged to meet the Lofoten inside the Trollefjord. It was quite amazing to see both ships in the narrow body of water. It was also incredible how close we got to the waterfalls!

Best chocolate in Norway:

by Saagar

That's Hval chocolate! It's a small, fairly obscure chocolate factory in the town of Sandefjord, Vestfold county. They do not export their goodies and they are not in the hands of global concerns like Kraft etc that has bought up most Norwegian chocolate and rediced the good ingredients in what used to be Freia and other companies good chocolates. You may have to search a little to get Hval's chocolate, as the global giants grab the sales and advertisement space as well. I especially like their dark chocolate hval (=whale) chocolates filled with pure marzipan....Check out www.hval-sjokolade.no and www.sjokoladeriet.no

City With Very High Standard of Living

by maryellen50

One of the most noticable things about your arrival in Oslo (especially if coming from the U.S.) is that the city is very clear and there are no signs of poverty and homeless people. Crime is minimal so you feel very walking around at night - something you don't do in most American cities. Being able to drink tap water straight from the faucet was a nice change - I can't remember the last time I did that in any U.S. city due to pollution.

Vikings

by tini58de

Part of the Norwegian history also deals with the Vikings. They were explorers, pirates, traders and settlers and are believed to have "discovered" America as early as 1000 A.D. When visiting Norway you will always hear references to the Vikings and believe me, their history and sagas are truly fascinating!

Norwegian stave churches

by Diana75

According to Wikipedia - The Free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/) "a STAVE CHURCH is a medieval wooden church with a post and beam construction related to timber framing. The wall frames are filled with vertical planks. The load-bearing posts (in the Old Norse stavr) have lent their name to the building technique. The churches are grouped into two categories:- the first without free-standing posts, often referred to as Type A, - the second with a raised roof and with free-standing internal posts, usually termed Type B.Those with the raised roof, Type B, are often further divided in two subgroups:- the Kaupanger group with a whole arcade row of posts and intermediate posts along the sides and details mimicking stone like capital, giving an impression of a basilica- the Borgund group with cross braces joining upper and lower string beams and the posts, forming a very rigid...

Norway fjords

by Diana75

According to Wikipedia - The Free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/):"a FJORD is a glacially overdeepened valley, usually narrow and steep-sided, extending below sea level and filled with salt water. Fjords are found in locations where current or past glaciation extended to sea level. A fjord is formed when a glacier (carving its typical U-shaped valley) meets the sea and melts. This leaves a narrow, steep sided valley into which the sea floods. The flood creates a narrow, deep lake (sometimes as deep as 1300m) connected to the sea. Fjords are found all along the coast of Norway, Iceland and Greenland, in the southwest corner of New Zealand, and on the south and west coasts of Alaska. The largest fjord in the world is Sognefjorden in Norway".

Midnight sun or completely darknes

by jonkb

Heard on a cruiseship: "Stewart: When does the midnight sun rise?"Norway has compulsory military training for all boys over 18. Or rather had - the military doesn't have the budget it once had. I did my service in Nothern Norway, and experienced the midnight sun. I actually had a little trouble with it. It never got dark, so I had trouble sleeping at night. The midnight sun is visible above the artic circkle, which is an imaginary line around the earth on 66,5 degrees arond the poles. It's only visible during the summer, and the further north you go the better your chances are to see it. The weather isn't really predictable in Nortern Norway, so the more days you have the better your chances of seeing the sun.A word of caution: Do not look directly at the sun without sunglasses (or even with sunglasses).

Aurora Borealis - Nothern Lights

by jonkb

The romans saw it and named it after the godess of the morning. The latin name is therefore the same as the godess: Aurora Borealis. Nothern lights (it's common name) has several myths associated: The old Norwegians believed that you'd be kidnapped by the lights if you wave towards it with something white. I've heard that the Japanese think that babies being - eh - made - under the lights it will be a genius. Aurora borealis is a phenomenon that happends all over the globe, but more at the poles because of the earth magnetic fields. It's made up of particles from the sun that enter the earth atmosphere. You're best chanses of seeing it is as far North as possible, and as close to midwinter as possible (daylight deminishes your chances). The further you're away from disturbing light the better, so: No cities.
