Four great writers pluss one more

by jonkb

Whenever I visit a place, I try to read some of the writers from the country. In Norways case the most known writer is Henrik Ibsen. I'll write a tip on him alone. There are of course other writers: Bj?rnstjerne Bj?rnsson (1832-1910), Jonas Lie (1833-1908) and Alexander Kielland (1849-1906) has often been called the four great together with Ibsen (1828-1906). Another worth reading (particulary if you're traveling around R?ros) is Johan Falkberget (1879-1967). Some texts to read:Henrik Ibsen(See own tip)Bj?rnstjerne Bj?rnssonSynn?ve SolbakkenSigurd JorsalfarJonas LieUlfvungeneAlexander KiellandGarman & WorseGiftFortunaJohan FalkbergetDen tredje nattevaktAn-MagritChristianus Sextus

Norwegian feelings towards Sweden

by jonkb

Swedes say Norwegians have a little brother complex (directly translated) towards Swedes or Sweden. It's not true. The Swedes have a big brother complex about Norwegians or Norway! It all has to do with the latest union between Norway and Sweden. On paper there were two different nations, but you should not believe everything you read.

Nordic Mythology

by jonkb

Nordic Mythology was the pagan religion practiced in the Nordic countries untill the vikings were chritianed. Generally it was the same as the germanic tribes. There were several gods, all with special powers. Odin (Swedes call him Oden) were the principal god and the wisest of them all. He was the god that gave life to the humans. He was married to Frigg, and had a son Tor. Tor was a strong god and a god of war. His hammer (Mj?lner) always came back to him when he threw it. He was the god that created thunder. Tyr was the bravest of them all. Like Tor he was a god of war, but was more strategic then the brutal Tor. Loke was the god that always tried to outfox everyone. You cannot trust him, and you didn't always know if he was good or bad. Frej: Godess of love. Brage: The poets god. Brage was the god of justice. Ironicly enough killed by an arrow shot by the blind H?der after being...

Midnight Sun and Aurora Borealis

by jonkb

Heard on a cruiseship: "Stewart: When does the midnight sun rise?"The midnight sun is visible above the artic circkle, which is an imaginary line around the earth on 66,5 degrees arond the poles. It's only visible during the summer, and the further north you go the better your chances are to see it. The weather isn't really predictable in Nortern Norway, so the more days you have the better your chances of seeing the sun.A word of caution: Do not look directly at the sun without sunglasses (or even with sunglasses). Aurora borealis, or northern light, is a phenomenon that happends all over the globe, but more at the poles because of the earth magnetic fields. It's made up of particles from the sun that enter the earth atmosphere. You're best chanses of seeing it is as far North as possible, and as close to midwinter as possible (daylight deminishes your chances). The further you're away...

Henrik Ibsen

by jonkb

Whenever I go somewhere I try to read at least one book of a famous writer from the area. Comming to Norway that writer should be Henrik Ibsen. Born March 20th 1828 and dead May 23rd 1906 he lived through the Union with Sweden. He was thought at first to be a pharmasist, but I don't think he finished the training. Ibsen is considered to be the father of modern drama, and it's said that his works are the most frequently performed dramas in the world after Shakespeare. He wrote his first drama (Catilina) in 1850. Among his work is: Kongsemnene (The Pretenders), Brand, Peer Gynt, Et dukkehjem (A Doll's House),Vildanden (The Wild Duck), Gengangere (Ghosts) and Hedda Gabler, to mention a few. Most of his work is still atcual today. A doll's house in particular. If you want to read more about Ibsen, visit www.inbsen.net, or read et dukkehjem (a Dolls House), Villanden (the Wild Duck) or...

Edvard Grieg

by jonkb

Norways most prominent composer is without any doubt Edvard Grieg. He studied in Leipzig from the age of 15 among the best musicians Europe had to offer. After studying in Leipzig he went to Copenhagen. The most natural place for a Norwegian composer to be during that time. Griegs style was definetly based on the german romantic tradition, but he became more and more aware of the Norwegian nationalist feelings growing in Norway. He met Rickard Nordraak (1842-1866: The choral settings of the national anthem) in Copenhagen. After a time in Copenhagen Grieg settled in Oslo (Then Christiania) in 1866, where he worked as a teacher as well as a msician. It was in Oslo he finished his piano-concerto in a-minor. That play has become synonymous with Norway. Grieg wrote music for orchestra based on traditional folk music. He returned to his hometown (Bergen) in 1874. You can still visit his home...

Father Christmas' postal address

by Saagar

You may not believe in Julenissen (Father Christmas/Santa Claus), but still thousands of kids write to Father Christmas, the North Pole, Norway. Now, there is no post office at the North Pole, so the Norwegian postal offices sends it all to the local Julenisse: "Julenissen, NO-1440 Drøbak" , check www.julehus.noAnother option is to write to: "Julenissen i Norge, NO-2500 Savalen, Norway" and hope for the best. The web site www.julenissen.no should give you an update of his whereabouts...In a tip on Svalbard I have written about the Father Christmas there, too, but the chances of responses from there are slim. Finland also lays claim to Father Christmas, and you find him at: "Sants Claus' Main Post Office, Santa Village, FIN-96930 Napapiri, Finland. Check www.santaclaus.fiGood luck! And be good this year, too!
