International travel clinic

by Saagar

Not exactly my favourite thing to do, this, but sometimes you will need that darn vaccination sting in the arm...If you need to replenish your vaccines for onward travels or whatever related to travel-induced illness or prophylaxis, the outfit Reiseklinikken does a good job to help you. These folks are active travellers themselves, good English speakers and love to scare you by terrible stories and funny anecdotes (if time). This is where I get most of my travel health advice from (directly and their web pages) and where I get punctured. It's a private clinic, so there is a fee to be paid regardless of nationality. The fee per vaccine varies by the cost to the vaccine producer/importer, and about 10 USD per actual injection done by Reiseklinikken. They can do the whole range of things (see web pages). On acute travel related diseases you may consult them also, but in severe cases they...

Snow Capped Montains, Fjords, People and Beauty

by GypsyLightChaser

For me it is the Nordlys, the Northern Lights. Sitting in a hot tub outside in freezing cold, by the sea enjoying a bottle of wine with that special someone in your life. Watching for the lights. Everywhere you look there is beauty. Hanging out in a Tromso Cafe having a coffee and incrediable pastery. Walking at night on the snow covered streets looking at the shops in a winter wonderland.Taking the cable car up to the top of the mountain to see the magic of Tromso. The love that I experienced there. Painting watercolors until 3 in the morning. Looking out the window and seeing the mountains and sea right outside the door. Feeling like I had come home and not wanting to leave for there is so much more to explore. The beautiful people that I met. I miss the man who lives there and hope to go back soon:)

Painting Norway with Music Notes...

by Porteplume

.Français:= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =English:Discover: Edward Grieg , Norway's Greatest Composer,(1843-1907).N.B: What the Web tells us:He painted with notes. He painted the people, the scenery, and the moods of Norway. In the immortal Peer Gynt Suites, Grieg captured the rising of the sun, the lamenting of a death, and, in 'The Hall of the Mountain King,' the imagery of a chase scene. His works contained what are yet today readily recognizable 'tunes.' As Grieg and his wife, Nina, strolled through the streets of Bergen, children would follow after, whistling these tunes, in tribute to the great composer. In the centuries ahead, surely the works of Grieg will continue to be whistled and hummed, and played by orchestras worldwide..

Currency

by Marpessa

This was the first time I used a currency so different from my own (The GBP and Euro are similiar enough to the Australian dollar for me to relate easily to them - the NOK however is a bit different, ie a 20 NOK coin has A LOT more value than a 20 AUD coin). I actually thought the currency was nice, and now have enough '1 Krone' coins left to make myself a bracelet (don't know if I'm actually going to do that).

Islam in Norway

by Saagar

Many people ask me about the Islamic wave in Norway, and several VT'ers have noticed many Moslems in Norway, too.First, there is no Islamic wave, second, you cannot really see if a person is Moslem? Third, the influx of immigrants has by and large been an enrichment to Norway's culture and economy ever since the early Pakistani (Punjab) settlers came here in the early '70es. The last two summers I have noticed the large number of white girls who have taken to the Punjabi shalwar kameez as a fashion statement. There are 80.000 decleared or in any way by creed and own written statement recognized Moslems in Norway. These are divided in many nationalities and no less than 89 different religious societies. Many asylum seekers and immigrants tend to come from Islam-oriented countries (but the biggest single immigrant group is American!), and they throng to Oslo. So the visible impression in...

Never trust the weather....!

by AbbyL

If you're travelling to Norway, I suggest you take a whole range of clothing, no matter what time of year it is. It seems their weather patterns are unpredictable, to say the least! We arrived in May, to find the airport under a blanket of snow! It was freezing cold the entire time we were there (just as well I packed a hat and gloves!), even though the sun sometimes shone as though it were a beautiful summer's day. Between these sunny periods the heavens would open and we'd get soaked through, though the locals don't seem to be at all concerned about rain. None of them seem own umbrellas! Make sure you take your own, just in case!

A journey with a Hurtigruten ship

by 78Eva

I was so fortunate as to have the chance, during my year in Norway, to do an internship on the MS Kong Harald for about two weeks. I had a little berth on the ship, ate with the crew and worked about six hours every day. For that, I got the trip for free. I had to do all kinds of tasks, washing up, serving food, selling postcards etc. There was enough time left to stroll the ship, sit on the upper deck which has all glass windows so you can enjoy the landscape, or look at the cities you stop at. Many times, in smaller places, the ships will only stop for an hour or so, but in places like Trondheim you will have about six hours. Of course you need to be back on the ship in time!I saw marvelous places, the more north we got, the more exciting! Sometimes there would just be an icy coast for a long time without houses to be seen. I liked Hammerfest. Kirkenes definitely felt a long way from...

Water - the beaches

by Saagar

Oh, I would go to South Sandfjord (Sörsandfjord) or North Sandfjord (Nordsandfjord) at Söröya in Northern Norway on a fine, warm summer day. This place is called South Island (Söröya) probably because it's located just south of the North Cape. The water temperature is not very impressive, about 8 degrees would be the off-shore average sea temperature in July-August....Warmer here in the fjords, though. And with good company, never mind.

Waterfalls

by Saagar

As a homeboy, I would state that water is the most significant feature of this country. You may perhaps add mountais, too, but that's more wishy-washy.If you look at the actual and factual list of the world's highest waterfalls, most of the top 20 are in Norway. Chance is that very few local people know or take an interest, so you may have to search on maps and in literature to get beyond the tourist-trappy waterfalls. The greatest concentration of huge waterfalls and foaming rivers are in the Hardangerfjord area, the Nordfjord area, the inner parts of the Sognefjord, the Romsdal and Eikesdal area, The Sunndal and Litledalen valley, and the areas south and north of Bodo.Romsdal and Sunndal are special because of the proximity of rivers/waterfalls to the main roads. The waterfalls of Norway have been severely destroyed and decimated due to hydroelectric exploitation. You will pass through...
