Constitution day

by jonkb

If you can choose which day to be in Norway out of every day of the year: Choose May 17th. "17. Mai" is our constitution day, and widely celebrated. The day starts with the flag being raised. There will be organized marches where everyone is welcome to participate. Bands will be leading the parade, Schoolclasses will be marching after them. In most cities there are Borgertog: Parades where different groups show what they are good at, or ordinary people just go for fun. The tourist offices should help you to find their route.Do not forget to take pictures of all the national costumes. You can (if you're good) tell where the person comes from just by looking at the costume.

Wooden pannels

by jonkb

Did you know that you can see if you are in a rainy place on the houses? The outdoor panel in a place where it rains a lot (like Bergen) the pannels will usually be placed horizontally. That way the water that bounces on the ground will only wet the lower panel. That way you only change the bottom pannel instead of all the panels.

See the midnight sun!

When you visit Norway in summer see the midnight sun! It is so impressive, when it does not get dark in the night and the mild light of the sun keeps you awake. Both photos were taken by myself around midnight, when our ship was passing the Lofoten.

Defrosting Norwegians

by diocletianvs

If you happen to arrive to Norway from another European country you’ll probably find Norwegians a little bit cold. If you’re coming from Mediterranean country then your first impression is most likely be that Norwegians are deeply frozen. So it’s essential to learn some “tricks” on “defrosting” Norwegians. Norway is a huge country, that doesn’t have a strong urban tradition. If you look at typical Norwegian landscape, you’ll hardly find any villages as well – it is a landscape of scattered farms. For generations Norwegians were used to live with first neighbours being a couple of kilometres away. The second theory of northern coldness takes the weather conditions into account: if you live for the most of the year with average temperatures of minus 10 degrees C, with strong wind blowing heavy snow into your face, it is unlikely that you’ll walk the streets cheerfully smiling and waving to...
