Ok, I admit it: I have never heard of Ole Bull before coming to Bergen. But he’s quite famous here. Along with composers Edvard Grieg and Harald Sæverund he was also born in Bergen which is enough for some to give Bergen the name of “City of Music for All Tastes”.
Anyway, whether you are here because of the music of something else, it’s hard to miss Ole Bull’s statue at Ole Bulls Plass in centre of Bergen.

I found the following info about this famous person from Bergen:

Ole Bull 1810-1880
One of the greatest violin virtuosos of his time.
He was a violin solist of international repute. Born in Bergen, he travelled all over Europe and North America to give concerts. He sought to make the folk musik and culture of Norway more widely known. As a violin virtuoso, he was widely acclaimed for his brilliant improvisations, and for the rich tone of his play. Around 1860 he conceived the idea of a Norwegian Academy of Folk Music, but was never able to gain public sponsorship for this project.

And for the music freaks: be sure not to miss the Edvard Grieg Museum at Troldhaugen: www.troldhaugen.com

Lysøen Island
The beautiful and extraordinary villa on Lysøen (the Island of Light) was built as a summer residence for the Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull (1810 - 1880) in 1873. Ole Bull’s charismatic personality and musical excellence had a great influence on contemporary artists. He spent his summers relaxing on Lysøen, and often invited fellow artists and musicians. Ole Bull also had created some 13 km of pathways to provide his guests with leisurely strolls through the lovely scenery of Lysøen. He died on the island in 1880. In 1973, his granddaughter Mrs. Sylvea Bull Curtis of Connecticut donated the villa and all its contents to the Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments. Café for light refreshments. Rowboat hire

The wonderful house on Lysoen was the summer residence for the Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull (1810-1880) in 1873. He died on the island in 1880. Like the house of Grieg, I found fantastic to walk in the house of one of the best musician of all times!!!!!

This is one of the cities most important former citizens. He was the first ever Norwegian violin soloist. His statue stands on a rock with a fountain. It is surrounded by a rock pool which has stepping stones across it.

These children seem to be enjoying playing in the splashing waters of the fountain at Ole Bull's Plass.
There are several hotels, bars and restaurants around the area, making it a convenient meeting spot.

Ole Bull's summer house

The small island of Lysøen where the summer house of the violinist and composer Ole Bull is located.
The area is today a museum and concert hall.

The island also have some very beautiful gardens.
