Hordaland Things to Do

  • Mount Fløien

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Bergen Things to Do

In my opinion, one "must-do," even on the shortest visit, is to go to the top of Mount Fløyen. You can walk up if you like, but the most fun way is to take the Fløybanen funicular. Atop the mountain, you are rewarded with excellent views of Bergen and the sea. Facilities at the top include a cafeteria (only open weekends in Winter), a souvenir...

  • Fish Market

    Bergen Things to Do

One of the best fishmarkets I have ever visited just a pity everything is so expensive. All the vendors were nice and gave us samples to try. If not for that I do not think that I would ever have had whalemeat

  • Hansa Bryggen

    Bergen Things to Do

The soul of Bergen are the old warehouses Bryggen (translated from Norwegian - dock), overlooking the harbor. The distinctive facade of the houses is the face of Bergen. In the past they were the center of the Hanseatic League. Now they are converted into shops and galleries, ethnographic workshops and are part of the World Heritage of UNESCO. It’s...

  • Buildings, streets and Alleys

    Bergen Things to Do

A little behind the iconic warehouses begins the old town of Bergen. All the small streets with white houses are wonderful. I noticed that most of them are paved, just as in my home city Plovdiv. Interesting paintings on the walls diversify visitors. Even the small table with flowers in front of one house was really charming in the sunny winter...

Have a stroll in the beauiful neighbourhood of Nordnes, in the centre of Bergen. Nordnes is a peninsula and neighbourhood in the city centre. Here you will find the typical Bergen houses, ie small wooden houses, and narrow cobbled street. At the tip of Nordnes is Nordnesparken and the Aquarium. Main road: Walk the road Markeveien north-east...

  • Mount Ulriken

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Bergen Things to Do

Bergen is surrounded by seven hills/mountains, of which Mt. Ulriken is the highest one. One can go by a nice cable car up, but there are also many paths for those who want to make it on their own and walk/hike all the way up. Up on the hill there is no restaurant; in that sense Mt. Floyen was nicer place. It also had more places to sit and watch...

  • Fjords

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Bergen Things to Do

The fjord from the North Sea into Bergen is a beautiful one and should not be missed. Be on deck in order to enjoy the cruise, best at the end of the day when there is a lot of activity in the harbor and fjord. In our case, the ship was the Holland American Line Prinsendam which has many viewing areas and can easily clear the bridges into Bergen.

  • Edvard Grieg / Troldhaugen

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Bergen Things to Do

After touring Grieg's home you can take a stroll down the path leading to the fjord at the bottom of the hill. There you will find Grieg's grave, he died in 1907, marked with a large plaque set among the pines. It is a very serene and beautiful place.

    Bergen Things to Do

Bergen akvariet was found in 1960. It has about 60 aquariums, representing one of the most extensive collections of marine fauna in Europe. There are seals and penguins in large outisde pools. They also have a cinema with 3D films on Bergen and Norwegian coast. If you are staying in Bergen for more than a couple of days, give it a try. Open on...

Though a major city, you don?t have to travel far before you are in prime birding habitat. One area that is well worth a visit is Kalandsvatnet. This large lake is surrounded by woodlands and farmland. At Kalandsvika you will find a observation tower that looks over reedbeds with such species as Sedge Warbler and Reed Bunting. If you need a guide...

    Bergen Things to Do

The main pedestrian street in Bergen connecting the fish market with one of its more prominent churches has a monument to the city heroes throughout the history of Norway – from the times of the Viking exploits to contemporary chores. The panel over the statues of the Vikings has a curious interpretation of the lands they visited. The totem-looking...

    Bergen Things to Do

The Fantoft Stave Church is one of the famous wooden churches of the Vikings. In Norway there are about 25 such left and in northern Europe about 5-6. Exactly this church dates from the 12th century but after a fire it was completely destroyed and rebuilt in 1992.

Our cruise shipped docked by this small fortified tower residence. While everyone else went off on excursions, we walked over to this area of green space and enjoyed the peace and quiet. The tower residence also has interesting gargoyles among its interesting architecture. The site can be visited in part of day, allowing time to go to other...

  • Mariakirken / St Mary's Church

    4 out of 5 stars

    Bergen Things to Do

This church was closed for restoration when we walked over to it from the Rosenkrantz tower residence. It was built in the early 12th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture. While the exterior is interesting due to the roofline and shapes, interiors of the old churches are nice due to the art. This is a small church that can be walked...
