Scheduled flights to Copenhagen

SAS is opening direct flights to/from Copenhagen-Ålesund. That's something I would have spent my Eurobonus /Star Alliance points on if I were living in either of those two cities. Ålesund is a good weekend city.

how to get to Ålesund

From Oslo you can get to Ålesund in three different ways. You can take the train to Åndalsnes, and from there take the buss to Ålesund. it takes around 10 hours.

You can take a buss from Oslo to Ålesund which takes around 10-12 hours

And finally you can take the plane from Oslo to Vigra in Ålesund. The plane takes 50 minutes. the sad thing is that you don't get the feeling that you're fare away from Oslo

Landing in vigra can be quite a dissapointment. It was dusty and it didn't look like I was going to Ålesund. But after driving through the tunnels (which goes under the sea) for 25 minutes I was finally there!!!.

Ålesund is connected by air to Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen by air, and has some charter plane connections to international destinations, too.
The airport is at Vigra island, some ways north of Ålesund. The place is windy and exposed to much bad weather, so it's probably worth checking if it'suseful to buy the ticket for today...

You can take a bus either from Andalsnes or Alseund. Jounery time averages around 1.5 to 2 hrs.
The best way to explore Molde is simply by walking!!! And do remember to see the snow capped mountains from Varden.

Most cruises that go to Norway...

Most cruises that go to Norway also go to Ålesund. Especially if they are also going to Geiranger, which is not that far away. A popular way of travelling is by taking the Coastal Steamer from Bergen.

You can also take the train from Oslo, but unfortunately, the railway stops in Åndalsnes. From Åndalsnes, it's a 2 hr bus rude to get to Ålesund. There is also the night express bus that will take you all the way to Ålesund from Gardermoen International Airport in Oslo over night.

If you still prefer to fly in, Ålesund's airport is called Vigra, and the airport code is AES. From there, you can either take the airport bus to Ålesund. This trip will take you through TWO underwater tunnels.
Ålesund is a relatively small town. If you stay downtown, you'll have just about everything within walking distance. But if you wish to go a little farther than that, such as making a trip to the college, or Sunnmøre Coast Museum, you can always catch a bus.

Given the age of the city, some streets can be very narrow, and a lot of streets go only one way. There's also not that many public parking spots downtown, and what is there usually have parking meters, or you need a special parking ticket available from a nearby machine. However, after 5pm and during weekends, it's free parking. Just don't park in areas that are marked 'sone' (zone) - these are for local residents. Obviously, if you're staying at a hotel, the hotel will always have a parking spot for you.

Bottom line - Ålesund is a pedestrian friendly city. And it's well worth it to just walk around anyway, in order to take it all in.

By car:

Basically, just drive to the northern end of the European highway E136.

By airplane:

Just fly from Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) to Vigra Airport Ålesund (AES) with either SAS or Braathens. There's usually a flight every 2 hours on weekdays.

By ship:

Just take a trip on Hurtigruten (for travel plans, information and booking, go to www.hurtigruten.com). This trip goes daily along the coastline from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north and back.

If you have a car, get a map over Alesund and drive around. Usually there's plenty of parking space for most locations.

If you don't have a car, the best way to get around, is to take the bus. Between Hessa (far west-side city) and Moa/Spjelkavik (far east-side city), a bus is scheduled in both directions approximately every 15 minutes (daytime on weekdays). Visit Ålesund Bilruter for complete schedules.
