Ferries on Kystriksveien

by evaanna

Kystriksveien cannot be negotiated by car only. At places the road is substituted by ferry crossings, which cannot be avoided. Not that we wanted to avoid them, treating them as an additional attraction and a welcome rest for my husband, our only driver. Every ferry crossing was an adventure in itself. Exploring the ferry, finding the best vantage points from which the area could be observed, getting a (soft) drink from the bar and, above all, looking and looking... The scenery was great: the mountains emerging from the sea, the little and bigger islands, the wilderness with hardly any signs of human activity. Norway was again showing us its best points. There were very few passengers on board, which made the crossing even more relaxing. I remember sitting right at the front on deck, absorbing the natural surroundings and the peace and silence interrupted only by the murmurs of the...

Crossing the Arctic Circle

by evaanna

I was sitting on deck enjoying the wonderful peace of the sea and the mouintains when I sensed a sudden commotion around me. Out of nowhere, as if touched by a magic wand, all the other passengers appeared around me. Something was about to happen. And indeed a moment later I heard an announcement on the loudspeaker, first in Norwegian, which I didn't understand at all, except for something resembling 'arctic'. By the time they repeated it in English, all the tourists had gathered on port side, pointing to something and taking pictures. Reluctant as I was to leave my front seat in case somebody took it, I finally got up and saw an enormous globe on the rocky coast to the left of us, marking the Arctic Circle. So that was what it was all about! But we didn't get any certificates marking the event, as is customary if you cross the circle by land. Still, it's nice to be able to say we have...

The blue glacier and the emerald fjord

by evaanna

Driving along Road 17, you will come to a picnic area in a lay-by situated on Holandsfjorden. The view from here is undescribably beautiful - the emerald water of the fjord and the glacier- topped mountains above. And this particular glacier, Engenbreen, is not just white like most glaciers. It's definitely blue when the sun is out. If you feel like exploring it, you can reach it by shuttle boat across Holandsfjorden, which starts at Holand and takes about 10 min. The distance from the ferry quay to the glacier is 3 km along a gravel road, but you can hire a bike at the quay.

Artscape Nordland

by maritagnes

During the years 1992-1998 a unique and comprehensive art project was set into life, covering the entire county of Nordland. 33 artists - from 18 different countries -contributed with 33 sculptures in 33 municipalities. The meeting between the artist and the nature has been the origin to the sketch and idea of each artwork, and the dialogue between the artwork and the spectactor is one of the main ideas with this project. The way the sculpture is influenced by the special nature surrounding it, and the way it adds to and gives a new dimension to each place. The county of Nordland is vast, it covers 560 kilometres and 40.000 km2, so the collection makes an enormous art gallery, and would make a special theme for an art travel from place to place. From 2002 it has been decided to build a new sculpture every other year, so the collection is still growing.Try a virtual...
