Oslo-Bergen line...

by husain

Don't miss the 470km long train journey on the Oslo-Bergen railway: This incredibly scenic trip is one of Norway's finest, and passes through some breathtaking scenery, with mountain ranges fjords and plateaus. Whats more, its not a special package that will cost you extra. All you need is to get on the regular train service between Oslo and Bergen, and try and do it during the hours of daylight! The journey takes about 6 hours. Highly reccomended!!

Kvernes Stavchurch

by globetrott

The Stave-church of Kvernes is normally locked except for a very short summerseason and that was over already when I passed by there by my car at the end of August. I got back there with the excursion by Hurtigruten and the guides were waiting there for us and opened the church just for us.Photography is allowed inside the church, BUT only without flash and tripod.-------------------------------------------Hurtigruten is offering an excursion from Kristiansund to this church in combination with the Atlantic-bridge and ending at Molde. Depending on the time, when they are able to catch the ferry they will be at the church of Kvernes between 06.00 and 07.00pm and I am sure its possible to go there as well and take a look inside this wonderfull church with permission of the local guides, who are waiting there for the Hurtigruten-bus every day.

Notodden : Heddal Stavchurch

by globetrott

Heddal Stavkyrkje is one of the largest stave churches in Norway and it dates back to about 1196. Untill 1537 it had been a catholic church and afterwards Lutheran. The church looks very impressive from outside and has a lot of great woodcarvings and colorfully painted walls inside and a chair dating back to 1200 AD.There is a large carpark next to the church and a small museum in the basement of an old farmhouse and about 200 meters from the church there is another museum-village of old wooden houses.--------------------------------------------------Heddal Stavkyrje is open for visitors :20th May – 19th June 10am -5pm20th June – 20th Aug. 9am -7pm21st Aug. – 10th Sept. 10am -5pmentrancefee is NOK 60,------------------------------------------------------Heddal Stavchurch is an easy halfdaytrip from Oslo - maybe in combination with Kongsberg. The distance from Oslo is about 100km.

Kongsberg: a great church and the Gloger organ

by globetrott

In Kongsberg you will find an interesting church, that does not look very special from OUTside, but it has a great interior: This church has seats for about 1000 miners (for the closeby silver-mines) and a great organ:The Gloger organ is certainly one of the most interesting sights in Kongsberg Church, it was constructed by Gottfried Heinrich Gloger (1730-1779) between 1760 and 1765, he used to be a wellknown organist and organ builder in Norway. The organ has 3 manual and pedal instrument with 42 stops. In 1994 it burned down but it was restored again. It was interesting for me to see that the main altar is right under the organ in this church, I never every saw something similar so far in a church !------------------------------------The church is open for visitors:May 18th till August 15th:Mon-Fri: 10.00am - 04.00pmSat & Sun : 10.00-02.00pmAugust 16th-31st:Mon-Fri: 10.00am-12.00June1st...

Hurtigruten: Onboard art exhibits

by travelfrosch

Onboard the coastal steamer, you'll normally find at least one art exhibit. While your concentration will likely be on what's outside most of the time, take a few minutes to look at the art posted in the main stairwell. To book passage on Hurtigruten, take a look at my transportation tip on the subject, or visit their website.

Hurtigruten: What a view! (well, not really... ;)

by travelfrosch

We saw this amazing view from the deck of our coastal steamer when we... Just kidding. As you tour the ship, though, you will note lots of art and paintings. These two paintings were of the MS Nordnorge when she made an excursion to Antarctica. So, as you can see, not all of the lovely views are on the outside...To book passage on the Hurtigruten, take a look at my transportation tip on the subject, and/or visit their website.

information on very small towns

by delcity

since these are small places try a keyword search. many times people place what they write about a small place in the off the beaten path or some other tip listing on the page of larger town nearby. if another member has written about or ask about one of these small places a keyword search schould show it.

Stave Kirke at Roldal

by fomhuirean

From Telemark towards the Hardangerfjord on the N13 in the valley of Roldal, there stand a Stave church. About 400 meters of the main road in South East direction. For a little fee you can enter it. There is barely any light insight the church, but if you make a picture and use the flash, it’s a nice surprise to see that it is so colorful inside. Just incredible nice painted decorations.
