ROLDAL

by mtncorg

Along the highway over the Telemark towards the Hardangerfjord lies the valley of Roldal. This is a valley similiar to many other locations within rural Norway that in not too earlier times were isolated by geography and climate for large parts of the year. Roads could only be kept open for short periods of the year. Self sufficiency was the order of the day. Roldal, itself, occupies a very pretty valley which ends on a very pretty lake.

Eikesdal valley

by Saagar

By foot, by public transportation or by your own vehicle, you should go to see Eikesdal. Eikesdal valley is a parallell valley to Romsdal, and by road or rail you will need to pass through Aandalsnes to get to Eikesdal. A nice way of doing it is to travel through Eikesdal on your way between Sunndalsora and Aandalsnes. There is a road of sorts, but it is not normally recommended for toursits because of the standard and a certain degree of scaryness...Eikesdal is a the centre of some of the world's highest water falls, and even if many of the waterfalls in the area are killed by hyd-el exploitation, they will run freely during the summer and snow melt/flooding season. In Eikesdal itself is the 650-metres Mardalsfossen (in two steps). It takes about a kilometre's walk to get there on a rough path, and through spray and scree to get very close to the foot of the falls. There are excellent...

Ona - a hospitable fishing community

by Saagar

From either Molde, Aalesund or Brattvaag in Moere and Romsdal County you can easily reach the fishing community of Ona. Ona is located way out on a stretch of the coast named Hustadvika, known as one of the toughest and most windeswept areas of the coast. Summers can be nice, though. Some 60 persons live there year-round, and most families live of a combination of fishing, ceramics production and other arts, pensions and local service trades. There is a shop and a sort of hotel, which in fact is quite comfortable. The easiest way to get there is by bus from Molde town, across the island of Aukra (a short ferry ride to get there) and they'll drop you at Smaage, just a ferry harbour, where the ferry takes you (not the bus) onwards via Orten, Finnoy and Sandoy islands to Ona. Sit on top deck for the view.Ona consists of two main islands conncected with a small bridge; perhaps two sq km,...

Nordmoere - an underrated area

by Saagar

Consider exploring the area between the Sunndal fjord system and Orkanger to the west. This part of Norway, Nordmoere, with its easily accessible mountains, the islands and fjords, is little advertised and highly underrated as a place to visit. Further west, in the Sunndalsoera area, you find a wilder landscape and yet more good hiking terrain. In Litledalen Valley (just south west of Sunndalsoera) is the highest sheer mountain drop in Norway, about 1800 meters. A slightly scary road goes past here up the mountain and down again to Eikesdal valley/lake, from where you eventually get to Aandalsnes and Romsdal valley and some of the world's highest waterfalls.

Todalen valley

by Saagar

Todalen (valley) is one of the indentations on the north-west coast of Norway. It's a dead-end kind of place, and not the sort of place you'd normally consider. But here is one of the warmest (temperaturewise) places in Norway, a genuine fjord community based on a mixture of agriculture and furniture-making industry, beautiful mountains and plenty of hiking options. Following the road along the fjord coming in from the north, you will pass Svinvik Arboretum, a research station and huge plant garden of Scandinavian and exotic trees and flower plants. Bamboo aplenty at 63 degtees north! Entrance fee.At the end of the fjord there is a small settlement near the fjord with some interesting houses. 2-3 kms up the west side of the river Todalselva (good salomon and sea trout fishing) from the fjord, is the Todalshytta local DNT hikers' association's accomodation in a long dead English lord's...

Norwegian Islands: Small Is Beautiful!

Road 21/22

by Leipzig

When you are in the south of Norway I recommend to drive road 21 along the Swedish border. From Skotteruö to Halden and then the road 22 to Hällevadsholm (S). A small road, about 200 km long - it takes about 5 hours. Many lakes, rivers and small towns on roadside. Excellent scenery!
