Norwegian character

by vairab

If you ask people what they associate with Norwegian history and culture, their answers will vary a lot. Some will say the Vikings who sailed to foreign parts to pillage and wage war, although the Vikings were in fact also merchants who founded kingdoms on foreign soil and brought back new impulses to Scandinavia. Others will point to internationally famous authors, composers, actors and painters such as Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Grieg, Liv Ullmann and Edvard Munch. Or attractions like Vigeland's sculpture park, Holmenkollen and the stave churches, the expeditions of Thor Heyerdahl, Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. Maybe even smoked salmon, lutefisk, reindeer meat, shrimps or cloudberries. One thing is certain - Norway is more than untouched nature. The country has a rich history, but is poor in large historic monuments. Nature has however formed the Norwegian character and given it a kind...

Tromso - in October

Coming from Manchester UK, arriving in Tromso in October to a metre of snow was "interesting". Getting around the local area was so easy - friendly people, great bus services. "Must-sees" include the ice cathedral and the planitarium.

Garage/Jumble Sale

by JuraidahJ

In Spring and summer, a lot of schools will hold garage/jumble sale - used item or second hand product. You get to mingle with the locals and on top of that you will be surprise what you can get from such event.... if you have the time to look around. It is fun.. hoping from one sale to the other. You have to be there early or you will loose out on all the good stuff. For such event, you would have to ask around among the locals.

Antique shops

by JuraidahJ

When in Bergen, walk along the small streets and you will discover that there are a lot of antique shops... I cant remember the name of the street...Will check and input on the name of the street. Antiques dated as back as early 1800s can be found. Do bargain and dont get cheated with a replica. Especially the blow glass items!!

THE MARSHMALLOW GROWING

Red Houses

by GUYON

WHY THE NORWEGIAN HOUSES ARE RED ? To be easily seen on the snow ? No. Because the wooden houses were painted with a mix of powder of copper and glue made with cereals in order to prevent the damage of fungus or insects. The current paint is more sophisticated but it is the same principle.

Voss

by Bjorgvin

Voss (Hordaland) is an agricultural town, which has cultural traditions stretching back centuries. Visit the Møstertunet folk museum and Finnesloftet, a wooden banqueting hall that dates from around 1250. Visit Vangschurch (built 1271–77, and still in use). If you are travelling by car, it is a good idea to take the Stalheimskleivene road down to Sognefjord. It is a great experience.
