The famous and beloved poet Åsmund Olavson Vinje came to Gran during his very last lifedays - and died at his near friend, the curate's house July 31th 1870.
Vinje is buried near the sister churches, and this monument was raised over him in front of the Nicolai church.
Granavollen is believed to have been an important meeting point in the vast Hada county in ancient times - a county corresponding to todays areas of Hadeland, Land and Toten. There has been an important ritual site on this place in pre-christian times.
Two ancient, important routes from Oslo meets here at this point - and this milestone (photo) tells that from here it's 533 kilometres to Nidaros - the medieval archepiscopal centre and capital - today Trondheim. Many pilgrims must have passed by this route on their way to Nidaros during the medieval era.
