Oye Stavkirke - picture perfect

We came across this beautiful stave church along Road E16. We had just passed Filefjell, a most scenic and wild mountain area, which I simply must visit again. And here it was, just by the road and looking like a picture from a fairy tale. So tiny against the rocky mountains in the background and with a lake of the purest blue right beside it. It was surrounded by wooden fence on all sides with no gate in sight but I think it was closed anyway.This triple nave church dating from the second half of the 12th century was initially situated next to Lake Vangsmjosa in Oye but there the Rodola River would flood the area almost every spring so that bodies buried in the graveyard would be flushed out of their graves. In the end, the church had to be moved further from the river. In 1747 the church was dismantled and its pieces hidden under the floor of the new church built on the site. They...
