Favorite thing: When you go to Scandanavia its difficult not to buy a troll for a souvineer. They are everywhere. Being a sucker for cheap tacky souvineers I found myself being drawn to every souvineer shop I walked past. But I can report that I did not give in and by any troll souvineers, except for one key chain.
i wanted to yell at this guy "Bring me a shrub!"

Favorite thing: If you have been to any of my pages here on VT you will know how much I like to pose for silly pictures. So I did not buy a troll but I could not pass up the opportunity to pose for a picture with one.
Trolls are part of the folklore of Scandanavia. It goes with the territory. Take some time to experience a troll moment while you are in Oslo.

Favorite thing: I have no idea who or what this statue represents. I came across it walking from the Royal Palace to the City Hall. It stands in the middle of the sidewalk in front of a movie theater. I found the tall lanky fellow quite interesting. Don't ask me why because I don't know. Jim, the other guy in the hat, asked me why are you taking a picture of that strange statue. My answer was I don't know I just like it. I tried looking up Gledespredern on Google and received all kinds of links but none in English.
If you are in Oslo and you are walking to the City Hall and see this fellow, think of me and perhaps give him a smile.

Favorite thing: In Oslo there is one 24 hours open pharmacy ( 'apotek' in norwegian). It is located down town at Jernbanetorget (across from main railway station and shopping centers 'Oslo City' and 'Byporten').
In 2004 shops, kiosks and petrol stations was given permition to sell painkillers (not the strongest ones) and a few other "light" medical stuff, othervise we norwgians have to go to the pharmacy.
If the door is closed when you visit outside normal opening hours, ring the door bell (at least it was one there when I had to visit at 0700 some years ago).

Favorite thing: A good way to relax is to take a walk in Vigeland Park. Be prepared to answer embarrassing questions, if you go with chlidren, as the whole park is covered by naked statues.
Fondest memory: Here is an interesting figure. I call it the "angry father" as opposed to the famous "angry child" statue.

Favorite thing: There are always some 'cute' photo opportunities around in Oslo in the form of extra large trolls that many businesses place outside their shop or restaurant.
Here is a typical example : The Troll is the one on the left. Sorry Arann.

Favorite thing: Many of the museums and attractions in Oslo operate a 'late-night' policy on Thursday nights. Many of them are open until 7 or 8 O'clock at night.
Very useful for rapid sighteeing, especially where there are several free museums grouped together - such as the modern art museums.

Favorite thing: I have seen this fountain more here on VT but it is very nice to see it in real and working.
It´s a funny sight to see all the individual pipes making one complete bowl.
Its in the park next the National Theatre.
When i was in Oslo time before last, it was just for an evening in winter time. Then it was all dark and covered in snow.

Favorite thing: Oslo's Central Post Office is convenient for many hotels that visitors are apt to be staying in. The main entrance is at the corner of Prinsens gate and Dronningens gate. If you come here to purchase stamps, you'll want to pick up a "number" at one of the dispensing machines, and then wait until you are called to come to counter. (Like a donut shop - at least where I come from.)
The Central Post Office was designed by a Norwegian Architect, Rudolf Jacobsen, and completed in the 1920s. It has those curious "onion domes" that you frequently see on Oslo's churches.

Favorite thing: Tordenskiold -- who he?
This statue of "Tordenskiold" stands near the water of Oslo's harbor, in the Rådhusplassen, but I have to admit that I had no idea who or what he was when I snapped this shot. And it took a little bit of research to find out. But I'm not a historian for nothing!!! There are not many web sites in English that discuss the career of the great naval hero Peter Wessel, known as "Tordenskiold," -- Thundershield in English. Wessel was born in Trondheim in 1690, and rose rapidly through the ranks of the Danish navy. (At that time Norway was an appendage of Denmark.) He ultimately became Vice-Admiral of the Danish fleet, and fought couragely in the Great Northern Wars. But his life and career came to a sudden end in 1720, when aged only 30 he was killed in a pistol duel. I also read that he is very much associated with a well-known brand of Scandinavian safety matches. WOW! I learn something new every day.

A: While it may not win international awards for the best airline in the world, Iceland Air is perfectly fine. As for safety, the last crash was in 1978.
