Majorstuen Kirke is an older church surrounded by newer (and rather uninteresting) suburbs. But it made the headlines in 2000 when the bishop of the established Lutheran Church appointed an openly gay man to serve as curate here. At the time, there was talk of a large scale schism in the Church. While Oslo is certainly a very gay-friendly city, there are also many conservative elements in Norwegian society.
84 Kirkeveien, at Schønings gate.

Ada Madsen (1917 - ) is the artist of this modern piece of sculpture which stands in the courtyard of the "Hogskolen i Oslo," Wergelandsveien 27. It's right across the street from Slottsparken, the grounds of the Royal Palace. The title of the sculpture is "Omsorg for mennesket - vårt ansvar - vårt yrke." (Sorry, I don't have an English translation.)

Bokken Lasson (1871-1970) was a much loved Norwegian folk singer. She is remembered here in this statue in the Homansbyen neighborhood, at the corner of the intersection of Hegdehaugsveien and Oscars gate. The sculpture is the work of Joseph Grimeland (1916-2002).

Franklin Delano Roosevelt never had the opportunity to visit Oslo, but I'm sure he would have liked it here. Roosevelt is remembered here for issuing the Atlantic Charter, and he is honored with this statue in the Rådhusplassen.

If you go to Holmenkollen in the night, you should also check out the nearby Holmenkollen Rica Park Hotel. This beautiful building is even more beautiful in the night.
If you have loads of money you could also stay at this hotel, or have dinner here. But if you are on a tight budget it's better to just view it from outside.

If you have the opportunity you should go to Holmenkollen in the night. Of course the museums and shops are closed, but you will have the whole area to yourself.
The wonderfully lit skijump seems almost magical together with the moon and the stars. And there is something special about walking up there in the dark. You also have a great view of the city by night.

Situated on Gronland in downtown Oslo, near the bus- and trainstation, you can find this mosque. It is the second largest in Norway, and can house 1500 people. The walls are decorated with tiles from Iran and Spain. Calligraphy from the Koran is the central motive on the tiles.
It's very strange to come walking up Akebergveien, and suddenly see this mosque squeezed in between two 'normal' apartmentbuildings, right next to the road.

Here, exactly in this place used to be a bench where I used to sit in the summer, relaxing and people watching. Where did they take it? It seems they are doing some construction work here. Gee, things will never be the same anymore.

Hovedøya is 1 of the small islands right across Oslo & is a part of the Oslofjord. It's a one-day paradise for sunbathing, swimming, barbecuing aso.
The water was really warm, considering the fact that it's
~ Oslofjord ~ ! The temperature was just right - not too warm & not too cold - even for me, little Mediterranean polar*. :) So I had a great time finally taking a swim! :) A big problem can be entering the water, but that's easy - just remember that exiting is even harder! :)
If you want to combine your picnic with some sightseeing, you can check out the ruins of a monastery from the 12th century!
You can get there by taking lines 92 & 93 that go from Vippetangen to Hovedøya & later Nakholmen. They approximately drive every hour, but check the schedule in order not to miss the last boat - except you don't want that... :)
Check out my Hovedøya Travelogue for more photos.

There are plenty of lakes in and around Oslo, just in the forest of Nordmarka in the north you can find more than 300. The metro or bus will take you to many other lakes too. It's great to go walking around the lakes and exploring the birdlife that can be found many places. One place that is especially beautiful is Østensjøvannet. Easily reached with both bus and metro. Bring some bread to feed the many birds here. Very popular amongst kids.

A: While it may not win international awards for the best airline in the world, Iceland Air is perfectly fine. As for safety, the last crash was in 1978.
