Holmenkollen is world famous all over Oslo... So we think that everybody else knows about it, too...
Well, the Holmnkollen Ski Arena is a bit of a cult place, and you do not really need to be interested in skiing to visit. During the snow-free season, tourist buses and groups of visitors crowd the place.
As a visitor, there are a number of things you can do:
1) Visit the Ski museum, see the view from the ski jump tower, enjoy a lunch or so.
2) Do number 1, but skip the lunch and proceed to Frognersetra for a more decent meal or just the traditional hot chocolate/coffee and apple pie.
3) Do number 1, but not number 2, but go down to Holmenkollen Restaurant for a super meal with a good view of the city. Or choose Holmenkollen Hotel's restaurant. That'll set you back a few days' salary...
4) View a ski race, ski jumping competition (check the internet address below for a schedule)
5) Bring your own touring skis and enjoy loafing the area between Holmenkollen, Tryvanns TV Tower and Frognerseteren.
6) As 5, but for the more ambitious and experienced, head into Oslo's backcountry on hundereds of kilometeres of groomed ski trails. No fee. Bring a map of the ski trails.
7)Bring your own slalom skis and proceed to Tryvannskleiva and Wyllerløypa alpine skiing arenas. You can also rent equipment here.
8) Bring a sled or something like it and set out "Korketrekkeren" slide down for about three kilometers. You'll end up at a tram cum subway station that will take you back up to Frognerseteren for another ride.
9) Go for a major ski festival event or so. There are biathlon, ski jumping and cross-country ski world cup event every winter (December and March).

Every Wednesday afternoon the Bike Bus picks up bikers and their vehicles from the Frogner park (main gate) in Oslo at 16:45, with further pick-ups at Lysaker 16:55 and Sandvika at 17:00 and drops passengers and bikes at Damtjern. This is a perfect little lake which is just made by God for bathing, swimming, hiking. As you have your bike, presumably, there is no return bus... The idea is to bike or hike out of there and back to Oslo. You can also stay put, call a taxi or hike out and camp in the forest or whatever.
On Saturdays and Sundays the bus runs to Ringkollen at 08:45 in the morning. Runs from late May to early October.
The bus fare incl. bike is NOK 145.
NBNBNB!!!! You will need to pre-book: call them!
Equipment: Easy hiking and biking gear. And bike. Perhaps food, too, if you're not loaded up already after breakfast or early dinner. Or bring your food for a trail dinner?

As in many other countries, the most popular sport in Norway is football. Success by the national football team during the last seasons has contributed to an even greater public interest.
The high point of the season is the Norwegian cup Final, played at Ullevaal stadium in Oslo in October. The Norway cup is one of the largest football tournaments in the world. The tournament, played in July/August , is a major event for younger football players, and during the course of seven days, more than 3,000 games are played. 1250 teams , or more than 20,000 players from 32 different countries, participated in 1999

This is the modern sport stadium of Oslo. I admit I did not visit inside as it was not permitted but I took this picture when I was walking around. Most amazing was how they use this facility, I mean, in a country where they surely know how to collect taxes and over charge for everything, they also build shops and offices around this stadium facility to be used also when there are no sports events.

Connected to the previous tip about the Holmenkolen, I came across with some floppy disks, one of them containing more pictures from my adventure in Oslo.
Here you can see how "visible" was the show.

Holmenkolen is a ski jumping trampolin, north of the city, following line number 2 to Frognersenteren. I guess it was used during Lilehammer winter olympics.
I had the chance to see a jumping competition, but was so foggy that day that, though being only meters far from the "action", we could see nothing... so imagine the poor guy up there having to jump to the nothing. we could only hear the sound of the guys when they landed. and that's why I have no picture of it.

There is a few tracks in the Oslo area. But the best skiing/snowboarding slopes are located 2-3 hours away from Oslo.
For example Norefjell, Hemsedal and Trysil.
Equipment: It is possible to rent all the equipment for downhillskiing and snowboarding

Oslo is the home port of Christian Radich, one of the three large Norwegian tall ships. If she is in the harbour, you just cannot miss her so make sure you go and pay her a visit. But the best way to see this ship is under full sail, as part of the crew. It is possible to sail on Christian Radich, either for a week-end or for several weeks at a time. Just ask.
