Kon-Tiki by bpwillet 1947 was a marked day for Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl sailed from Peru to Polynesia to prove South Americans had contact with other cultures with simple structured boats as Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki. Many artifacts from the voyage and audio visual accounts are given to give a sense of what the passengers may have felt. Leave a Comment Phone: +47 23086767

Kon Tiki Museum by Donna_in_India From the Viking Museum, we headed over to the Kon Tiki Museum. On display were two of Thor Heyerdahl's sailing vessels, the Kon Tiki, which sailed in 1947 from Peru to Polynesia, and the Ra II, which sailed in 1970 from Morocco to the Caribbean. These vessels were actually balsa-wood rafts that not only were very small for such long journeys but didn’t look very seaworthy! I really found this museum fascinating. I love the spirit of adventure that comes from this museum (as well as the Fram Museum). All 3 museums on Bygdoy - the Kon Tiki Museum, the Fram Museum, and the Viking Ship Museum are all must sees in Oslo. Ra II-in the flesh by bpwillet Ra II was a papyrus boat constructed using ancient models that Thor Heyerdahl used to sail from Morocco to Barbados, once again proving West African inhabitants could have reached other cultures before Columbus had. The actual ship of Ra II is on display as well as artifacts they have used to base their models on, the items they carried with them, and some of the accounts of how the rafts were built. Contiki by stiab3 The Kon-Tiki Museum is a private foundation, which houses a range of boats and artefacts from Thor Heyerdahl's expeditions. Here you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft (1947) with a 30 foot whale shark underneath...statues and a secret family cave from Easter Island (1956)...the papyrus boat Ra II (1970)...and an exciting collection of archaeological finds from Easter Island, East Polynesia, Galapagos and Peru. I found this the most interesting of the maritime museums. Especially since Ra II finished its trans-atlantic journey in my home country Barbados.

The Kon Tiki by geekgrrl This museum contains ships and information on Thor Heyerdahl's ships and expeditions. It was crowded, rather dark, and seeing the Ra II and the original Kon Tiki were the only things I enjoyed. Why wouldn't they take me on the Tangaroa raft?! by nvm25 Visit to the Kon-Tiki just reinforced my impression of what an amazing personality Thor Heyerdahl was! You'll get to learn about his life and great adventures, as well as his great sence of humour and drawing skills (check out the caricatures that are on display in the left corner on the ground floor) The centre of the exposition is of course the legendary "Kon-Tiki" raft which was used by Heyerdahl and his crew to prove Heyerdahls radically new theory about how Polinesia got inhabited (thanks God, we don't have to do this in economics:)). Before him, people thought that Polinesian islands were populated from Asia, and the brave deed of five Norwegians and one Swede showed that prehistoric settlers could have arrived to these islands from South America on balsa wood rafts like the one in the picture. Just imagine what courage it must take to sale with a vessel like this for 101 days and 8000 km over the open Pacific living off the ocean itself just as the prehistoric sailors would do. And this - in 1947, when the world was still recovering from the world war and the modern rescue opportunities were not in place. The museum has many multimedia tools to bring you closer to the experience, including the Oscar-winning documentary about the trip. But best of it all is still the Heyerdahl's book "Expedition Kon-Tiki", which has been translated into 70 languages. That is some travelogue! I read it in Russian before coming to Norway and that is one of the most exciting reads I've ever had, which only proves that Heyerdahl was also a talented writer. All later expeditions of Heyerdahl are no less exciting and you can learn about them in the museum.

Kon-Tiki was the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition. It was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. Kon-Tiki is also the name of the popular book that Heyerdahl wrote about his adventures. Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in the south Pacific in Pre-Columbian times. His aim in mounting the Kon-Tiki expedition was to show, by using only the materials and technologies available to them at the time, that there were no technical reasons to prevent them from having done so. Heyerdahl and a small team went to Peru, where they constucted a balsa wood raft out of balsa logs and other native materials in an indigenous style (as recorded in illustrations by Spanish conquistadores). This trip began on April 28, 1947. Accompanied by five companions, Heyerdahl sailed it for 101 days over 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean before smashing into the reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947. The only modern equipment they had was a radio. The book Kon-Tiki was a best-seller, and a documentary motion picture of the expedition won an Academy Award in 1951. The original Kon-Tiki is now on display in the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo
