To Oslo by plane
  • Tip Rating:
  • I left Oslo by plane from the International Airport at Gadermoen. It is located about 50 km north of Oslo. There are various options to get to and from the airport: Airport Express trains (FlyToget), regular trains, airport buses (SAS and NOR-WAY) and taxis. Please read also my "Tourist Trap Tip".

    Torp airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Torp airport is not exactly near Oslo but about 120 km south near Sandefjord. Oslo's Gardermoen airport is bigger and closer (approx. 50 km north of the city).

The big advantage of Torp airport however, is that the low-fare-carrier Ryanair serves it from several destinations. Flights can be a real bargain. This made it the second-largest airport of Norway with more than a million passengers per year.

And don't worry about the transfer. There is a bus service in cooperation with Ryanair from the airport to Oslo. The transfer time is about 1h45min. The busses of the company Torp Expressen leave the airport 30 minutes after plane arrival.

    Explore Oslo by Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metro of Oslo is called Tunnelbane (T-Bane) and consists of five lines. Tickets are available as single ticket, flexi card (8 trips), 24 h pass or 7 day pass. Single tickets have to be stamped and are then valid for 1 hour of travel including transfers between the various means of public transport.

    To Oslo by bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • I went to Oslo by bus from Stockholm in Sweden. The bus company Swebus Express offers a bus service between both cities and the trip takes about 7,5 h.

Depending on the day of travel a single ticket from Stockholm to Oslo is between 265 SEK and 380 SEK (2004). The Bus Terminal of Oslo (Vaterland) is located just next to the Central Railway Station.

    Explore Oslo by tram
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the nicest means of transportation in Oslo is the tram. It consists of 7 lines. Most of them serve the central city. Tickets or passes can be bought from the driver, but tickets bought in advance are considerably cheaper. All tickets are valid on all other means of public transportation in Oslo.

Within Oslo borders there is only one price for the public transportations.
You can also take one of them across the Oslo border - tell the driver where you are heading (maybe he can tell you when to get off too?) if you have a valid Oslo-ticket show driver it, and you only pay from the Oslo border and to your stop. NB - at the subway you have to do this entering the station.
    .
    Where to buy tickets?
Some stops have a ticket machine, all subway stations, all Narvesen kiosks, some 7-eleven and a few "private" kiosks. At Trafikanten at Jernbanetorget down town (se photo) you can by all kind of tickets.
At Trafikanten you can also get free maps of Oslo and time tables + from january 2006 the Tourist Information opened a desk there too :o)
    .
You stamp the ticket in machine inside transportation (some busses you have to enter at front and driver stamps), subway at entrance!!!
Valid for 1 hour after stamped - travel as much as you can:-)
At most buses you have to enter in front and show your valid ticket.
    .
Sorry, link is only in norwegian :-(

Public Ferry No. 91 - Bygdoy

Oslo's public transportation includes 4 ferry lines to the offshore islands in the fjord. Number 91 serves the Bygdoy peninsula from the Town Hall Square (Radhuset). Number 92, 93 and 94 start at Vippetangen and serve various other islands, including Gressholmen. All public transportation tickets are valid on the public ferries.

    T-Bana (the subway)
  • Tip Rating:
  • I used the subway here when travelling around the city. The cost was slightly higher then other European cities but as here there is only random check for tickets, if you are on a budget, you can take your risk and try skipping the cost :-)

    Railway station
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the central railway station near the city centre. Actually you can see here in this picture in the background the old building in yellow and the new extended building in front. The train system is modern and automated. You can buy tickets on the vending machines easily, just be sure that you go on the right train.

    PRICES ON TRANSPORTATION
  • Tip Rating:
  • Prices on transportation in Oslo can be a bit expencive, especially if you buy a singleticket each time. If you plan to travel a bit you should concider one of the many cards instead. You can save a lot of money on this.

Also remember that singletickets bought by the driver are more expencive than if you buy them from a machine or vendor before entering (don't ask me how someone can come up with such an idiotic idea...)

    Prices in NOK, adults:
    Singleticket (bought onboard): 30,-
    Singleticket (bought in advance): 20,-
    Flexicard (8 tickets): 150,-
    Daycard (24 hours): 55,-
    Monthcard: 660,-
    3monthscard: 1650,-
Children are normally half the price of adults.

You can also buy a Oslopass instead, which gives you free transportation, free entrance to museums and discounts on plenty of things. For more info check out my %L[http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/18b41/3462a/1/
