SAS scandinavian airlines company is the best company to go to Scandinavia I ever choose. Of course the fares are high, but the fligt will be full of conforts. The service is great. A wonderful experience.

There are several boats that go from Norway to Sweden, Denmark and Germany. This is a nice way of getting to or from Norway. On board the ships are all kinds of restaurants, shops and activities. But be aware that many norwegians, especially young ones, use this boats as partyships.

The ferries take you around to many of the islands in the Oslofjord. If you have the opportunity you should visit at least one of these islands. Especially if you are here in summer. It's a great view of the city from the sea, and it's so nice to relax out on the islands.

    Take a Tram

  • A good way to see Oslo is by taking the tram. The numbers 12 and 19 give you a good tour of the city. You can buy a ticket from machines at some stops for NK20 and this is valid for unlimited travel for 1 hour. Good areas to see include Grunerlokka and Gronland. We found just getting off and on when we saw something worked well as they come along very frequently.

This card includes all means of transportation within Oslo (up to zone 4) on NSB (the Norwegian railways) and SL (Stor-Oslo Lokaltrafikk). If you choose to get around by car, you can park for free with this card. The card comes in 24, 48 and 72 hours, and must be validated on the first use.

I find that this card will give you the most value for your money if most of the sights you're seeing are covered by it. The first time I visited Oslo, it definitely paid off to have one.

Buy it online in the comfort of your hometown, print the voucher you get on your e-mail and pick it up at Trafikanten at Karl Johans gate, the Tourist Information Centers or at some of the hotels as of visitoslo.com.

Edit Sept 2009: A map of Oslo's transport zones can be found here (PDF file). Note that the card includes transportation up until (and including) Lilleström and Skedsmokorset, and from there you pay the fare to/from Gardemoen airport.

There must be very few subway lines in the world that :

    a) are covered in snow for much of the winter

    b) can also be fairly described as a mountain railway

    c) pass fantastic scenery overlooking a fjord

    d) can be used to access a sking area (see sports tips) and a Toboggan run, and an Olympic ski jump.

Trains leave from the centre of Oslo about every twenty minutes throughout the day.

Wow, we got it! We got an 1 cent flight to Oslo from Hahn and back. Yes, but without fees and taxes! So I booked 4 days in Oslo. With the airport Oslo Torp it is the same as with the airport Frankfurt Hahn. It is far away from Oslo, more than 100 km. But there is a bus transfer - 1h45 minutes to Oslo and other places in Norway. More infos about Torp express in the next tip.

1p each way, was the deciding factor for our 'girls' weekend away. (Ok it was 23.47GBP return including taxes etc! but still a bargain)

    Flight time, approx 90 minutes.

Departed Liverpool at 1400hrs, arriving at Torp airport at 16.50. Through Passports / baggage collection with no problems, with time to spare, before boarding the Torpexpress bus to Oslo. Departing at 17.30hrs.(see Torpexpress tip for more info)
Duty Free is open for arrivals, but We'd already bought our drinks from home.

Our return journey was on the Sunday, again we caught the Torpexpress from Oslo bus station, and set off along snow covered roads. Efficiently processed through Check in, time for a quick browse around the shops, enjoyed a beer in Lindys pub, then through Passport control. Boarded the plane- plenty of empty seats. This time our plane was Eirjet -presumably part of Ryanair. We were being given the safety talk, when the Captain cut in, to announce that the airport was closed due to snow! However, he anticipated a 30 minute delay only. In the distance we could see the lights of the snowploughs on the runway. Eventually we taxxied to an area near the main runway, where 2 crane like vehicles approached, and proceeded to spray the plane with anti-freeze/de-icer. A new experience!
We soon were ready for take off, and arrived in Liverpool about 10 minutes late.

    The best metro ever!!

  • Tickets are fairly cheap, you can usually skip paying, but its not worth the risk usually, the fine is huge!! But if your in a rush you can usually get away with it. Schedules are always on time and there are lots of stations situated around Oslo so its always easy to catch a train wherever you are. The best thing about the subway is it encourages communication. Its nothing like the London underground (then again what is) the seats are all facing each other so you must look at other people and share a smile, etc. No one covers their faces in newspapers the whole way :D
