Although Oslo is a very compact city and it's easily walked about, if your hotel is not in the centre it might become useful to take trams or metros. A ride costs 20 NOK with a ticket bought at the ticket-machine - but if you know that you are going to use it three or more times I recommend the day card.
A day card is a ticket that enables you to use all public transportation in the city and which is valid for 24 hours. It costs 60 NOK and can be bought at most tram/metro stops, as well as Trafikantes kiosks.
There's also a more epxensive Oslo Pass which lets in many museums for free. More information on this can be found by clicking the web address below.

In summer there seem to be many cruises on the Oslo fjord, while in winter one in stuck... theoretically, only. There are regular boat services to nearby towns and it's a nice way (cheaper, too) to explore the Oslo fjord.
As far as I know the following routes operate year round: Lines 91-92-93 from Vippetangen (behind Akershus Fortress) to Hovedøya, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, Lindøya east, Lindøya west, Nakholmen.
Another possibility, the one I took, is by boat to Nesodden and Drøbak. Boats leave from the Aker Brygge. The one to Nesodden is simply called "Nesodden ferry", while theo ne going to Drøbak is boat 602.
If you don't intend to go onshore, but simply stay on the boat there and back, you only pay for a one way ticket - and if you have a day card for the public transportation, you can use it on the boat and pay for a little price difference (25 NOK)

Olso S, also known as Oslo Central, is the main train station in Oslo and also a major transfer station for the T-Bane (metro) system. Form here you can catch the express train to the airport. It takes about 20 minutes and cost around $20 USD one way.

There are bikes you can rent in the Oslo tourist information. There are places all over the town where you can give them back. We didn't do it. We had bikes for free at the hotel, which we took twice.

The public transportation system in Oslo is rather ggod. There are trains, the metro (TBane in Oslo) the tram and busses. For us it was very easy to drive around, to come to the different places.
What I liked a lot, was that on the stops thre was a sign about how often the public transport is stopping there.

Wow, we got it! We got an 1 cent flight to Oslo from Hahn and back. Yes, but without fees and taxes! So I booked 4 days in Oslo. With the airport Oslo Torp it is the same as with the airport Frankfurt Hahn. It is far away from Oslo, more than 100 km. But there is a bus transfer - 1h45 minutes to Oslo and other places in Norway. More infos about Torp express in the next tip.

Go into the tower, and you'll find there Trafikanten. Trafikanten can tell you everything about the public transport. We went there because the give you as well an excellent map with the stations of the public transport. Don't forget to get a number there. See info in my local customs tip.
Inside the trafikanten tower there is as well a tourist information. If you want to get informations from them, you have to get an other number.

In Oslo you can use either the metro/subway or the bus to get around, besides taxi of course - and in some instances ferryboats.
It is amongst others possible to buy a 1 day pass or 7 days pass for 60 NOK or 210 NOK respectively for the city metro/subway. There are ticket vending machines at most or all stations and at the major stations you also have some manned ticket outlets. Check out the below links to their website:

If you rent a car in Norway, be careful not to speed! There are electronic sensors along the highways that take a picture or something as you pass. If you see a red light flash as you zoom by, you just got ticketed.
You are able to pay for your tickets at the gas station. If you just fess up and pay the fine right away, the fee will be less than if you wait for them to mail you an actual ticket.
