Outside with a view on a waterfall

by Tetreus

Well, life is rather expensive in Norway !Going out for diner or buying meat, alcohol or sigarets is really expensive.Luckily we don't smoke or drink much alcohol, so we prefered to buy some bread and cheese in a supermarket and we had a fabulous lunch outside in the fresh air.Look on the next picture, to see the gread view we had from our picknick-table :-))

Several places: Salmon - the fish

by Saagar

A general tip about salmon, that silvery fish with the pink flesh. Wild you will find it in most rivers of some size that runs into the sea. All wild salmon belong to a genetic tribe hosted by a single river. If this river's habitat is destroyed, the salmon of this genetic makeup is gone. With the farming of salmon in aquaculture nets, the result will be a genetic mish-mash. If this fish is released into the sea - which happens frequently by accident or sloppy management, the crazy-gene farmed salmon will mix with the wild pure-genes ones and generally lose the abilities of a wild salmon. Farming salmon is extremely uneconomical in a calory sense: for each kg of salmon farmed, about 4 kilos of fish has been consumed in the form of processed fish fodder. Due to the tight nets the farmed salmon is prone to disease and stunting (check the fins), and antibiotics is regularly added to fish...

Asylet: Old style goodness

by bpwillet

Housed in a finely kept historic building, this is a great spot to get a coffee and maybe a waffle in the morning or relax in the beer garden at back. First built as a family’s home in the 1700’s, it has changed its uses as a home to a prison, hospital and at one point a bank! Try any of their meat dishes for some really good Norwegian treats. It is a bit pricier but worth it.

Stortorvets Gjæstgiveri: Gotta try the reindeer

by bpwillet

This has a great outdoor patio out back. It is always quite lively and they have live music venues play here at least once a week. The staff is great and very friendly and also very patient when it comes to large groups. The reindeer here is excellent! The interior is typical for these historic buildings The reindeer was excpetional! So was the lemon and ginger sorbet for dessert.

no name restaurants: Eating out in Norway

by Saagar

Restaurants in Norway come in the following rough categories:1) Seasonal tourist-geared restaurants2) Cafeterias for road travellers3) Cafès 4) Fast food outlets 5) Upmarket celebration/business restaurants6) Gourmet restaurants in the bigger cities7) Local pubs or corner restaurants 8) Ethnic restaurants The gourmet restaurants can really be something, with crossover food. Not always super-expensive. Mainly in Oslo. Making super use of excellent fresh Norwegian raw materials. The ethnic restaurants have low prices and good taste, but meat quality can be lousy. For fast food, try the take-outs from the ethnic restaurants geared toward immigrants. The cafeterias geared toward road travellers can be real scandals if you compare with international tastes and cost/taste ratio. But this is the bland meat balls and potato menu that locals stick to. Typical tourist restaurants near museums,...

The Rip Off Restaurant!: BE CAREFUL!

by Kiwigirlie

BEWARE: Not sure of the name of the place but it's right on the waterfront next to a saddlery... We were recommended this place by our hotel owner who obviously didn't quite understand that we were on a budget... We know that Norway is expensive but what we didn't know was this place was on the expensive side and the small portion side!I had ordered scallops for starters and what I got was two small scallops (white flesh only) drizzled with olive oil, not cooked very well and with a big sprig of rocket leaf for £14 (That's nearly NZ$40!!) I was a bit annoyed with myself for convincing Austin to try this place out. His main meal of Reindeer was about the size of a small plum... The whole meal cost us £90!! I mean come on! We ended up walking down to the mall, finding McDonalds and having a decent feed! Tasty but there are better places to visit - I just wish I could remember the name of...

You might want to take out a loan for dinner!

by mancocapac30

We arrived in Bergen around midnight (it was still light) and needed to find something to eat. Of course most places were closed, so we went to a hamburger joint for a burger with fries. To our amazement, the meal came to almost $20 USD! For a burger! To partially mitigate the sticker shock the girl making the food was incredibly friendly -- and the choice of burger toppings was extensive. Believe it or not, corn actually tastes great on a burger!

Fish Cakes (Fiskekaker): A low-budget Norwegian specialty I

by YokuMoku

Fish cakes come in various forms and styles. The fish cakes in the picture are fried and can be eaten cold. You can eat them with bread or rice. I love to eat them with rice because the taste is surprisingly quite oriental, almost similar to that of Chinese fish ball. It is only the consistency that is slightly different. If I get bored eating the fish cakes per se, I cut the fishcakes into cubes and then fry it with eggs to make fish cakes omelette. Please note that this is my version. I have not met other Norwegians who make fish cakes omelette. The price for one box of fishcakes is 33NOK.

Grocery stores: Rema, Rimi, ICA, Kiwi, Mega, etc.: A low-budget Norwegian specialty III

by YokuMoku

This is the luxurious version of the fish cakes I have mentioned previously. It is made of "steinbit," lumpfish, or if you have penchant for Latin name, here it is, Cyclopterus lumpus.Since this is made of a particular fish, the price tag is also special, meaning it is more expensive than the ordinary fishcakes I have mentioned above. Tastewise, I must say that the ordinary fishcakes taste better.

Norwegian meat pudding/kjottpudding: Norwegian meat pudding for budget dinner

by YokuMoku

The ICA grocery store owner gave me this meat pudding for free because I told him that it was expired yesterday. This is quite a surprise because usually the store charges half price for expired food. Yeah, yeah, I am probably his only customer who is so keen in reporting many of the expired items in the store. Other customers do not bother to read expired dates when they shop.Buying foods that have expired for one or maximum two days will be a good idea for your budget travelling. Nevertheless, I don't recommend you to buy food that have expired for more than two days. To get the discount, you MUST tell the cashier that it has expired. Otherwise, you pay full price for it. The cashier should at least give you a 50-percent discount. Better if he/she gives it for free because instead of throwing away the food, it is better to give it to budget-conscious students and travellers, right? It...
