Norwegian Shrimp Sandwich: Divine culinary delight from the sea goddess! II

by YokuMoku

Finally, your stoic resistance to munching the shrimps while you peel pays off. Now, you can enjoy your hard work.Bon appetit!PS: Your shrimp sandwich may not look as nice as mine. Don't worry. Less elegant eating will still guarantee the same satisfaction. As far as arranging food beautifully, it is my innate hobby. I can spend hours arranging food nicely for food photography.

Norwegian Shrimp Sandwich: Divine culinary delight from the sea goddess!

by YokuMoku

To make the simple yet divine sandwich with Norwegian shrimps, you only need:-Round white bread (called "spiral loff" in Norwegian)-Mayonnaise (I choose Mills light mayonnaise in tube to reduce the calory intake ;-)-Lemons-Norwegian shrimps, bien sure All the ingredients can be obtained from grocery stores such as Rema which offers the cheapest loose frozen shrimps, for only 19NOK/kg. You can buy boxed frozen shrimps as well, but it costs more, 48-69NOK/kg depending on the size of the shrimps. Alternatively, you can buy unfrozen shrimps directly from fishing boats in the harbour or seafood stores, but of course you must pay much more. Tastewise, there is no substantial difference between frozen and unfrozen shrimps. So, for low-budget travellers, go for the Rema 19-NOK-per-kg shrimps. It is a bargain. This is how you prepare the sandwich:Peel the shrimps and place them on top of the...

Norwegian meat pudding/kjottpudding: Norwegian meat pudding for budget dinner II

by YokuMoku

In the picture, I slice the meat pudding for you so you can see how it looks like. The meat pudding is already cooked so you can eat it cold. The pudding can be eaten with bread, potato, or rice. Use your fancy and creativity. Cutting the meat pudding into cubes and cook it with water, cube bouillon, diced onion, and frozen vegetable mix (carrot, potatoes, green peas) will give you a simple soup while you travel. To add more flavor, you can add sliced Gilde sausages in your soup.

Brown Cheese: The Famous Brown Cheese!

by YokuMoku

I have a Polish classmate who swears that he will never ever eat brown cheese again after the first try. I cannot really relate to his reaction because I grew up in a non-cheese culture. For me, brown cheese tastes like caramelized milk, slightly salty and sweet. That is all. You just have to try it yourself when you come to Norway, and let me know what you think about this uniquely-Norwegian cheese. In the picture you can also see Norwegian sweet ripe home-grown plums. These plums do not look very smooth and perfect because in general Norwegian fruits have less pesticide than their continental European and American counterparts. So, in sum, they are like girls with no make up and no plastic surgery, just true honest natural beauty. The plums are simply a sweet treat you should try when you come to Norway during the plum season.

Vossa Dravle: What the heck is this Vossa Dravle!

by YokuMoku

Vossa Dravle is a dessert made of milk. Some love it, but as for me, I don't crave it. So my "Somewhat Unsatisfied" rating is rather biased. You only need to taste it for yourself when you come to Norway.

Multer: Norwegian Cloudberries: Once in a lifetime, you just must try multer! II

by YokuMoku

I love to eat my multer fresh while I am picking them in the mountains, an explanation why my basket is never full. Another way to enjoy your hard-earned multer is to mix these cloudberries with sugar. Yeah, simple as that. Then you eat this jam with your bread or pancakes or ice cream or, well, if you are like me, eat it just the way it is. Nam...nam....Just be creative and improvise!

Rema: Do you still want to buy these bananas?

by YokuMoku

The photo shows Dole rotten bananas sold for 9NOK/1.3USD per kg at Rema in Molde on June 29, 2004. It is quite common for Norwegian grocery stores to sell rotten produce for a "discounted" price. Expired items are often displayed on the shelves and sold at full price. For processed food such as sausages, meat cakes, ham, etc, you can get them for half the price if you tell the store that the items have expired one or two days ago. If you do not let them know, they will charge you full price as if nothing happens. Therefore check the expiry date carefully before you buy. It is not uncommon that you find canned food that expires one year ago still displayed on the shelves. If you shop at immigrant shops, you must be extra careful because you will find more expired items on the shelves. In an Asian store in Oslo, I once found a jar of jam that expired FOUR years ago and still sold at full...

Yoplait and Tine: Yes, Yoghurt with real fruit chunks in it!

by YokuMoku

I find that Norwegian and Finnish yoghurt is really fruity--with real chunks of berries and fruits in it--and less sweet than the American yoghurt. Hence the taste is fresher and more tangy. You can buy either Yoplait or Tine yoghurt. Tine is more tangy than Yoplait. Norwegian Yoplait is more fruity and less sweet than the stiff fruitless American Yoplait. Personally, I prefer Yoplait to Tine.Price for a pack of 4 x 125 g Yoplait: 17.5NOK at ICA, which is one of the more-expensive grocery store. Rema's price is slightly cheaper.

Stabburet Mackerel

by YokuMoku

This Stabburet canned mackerel in tomato sauce will provide you with a delicious healthy practical cheap meal. You can eat the mackerel out of the can with bread or rice, whatever you fancy. You can also buy this cheap made-in-Norway mackerel as a gift for your friends back home. But if your friends grow up in the beef culture, you better make sure first if they like to eat fish. Otherwise, they will not eat this mackerel.Best brand to buy: StabburetPrice: 10NOK, 170 gramIngredients:Mackerel fillet (70%), tomato paste, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, antioxidant.Energy: 283 kcal per 100 gram
