Not any doubt: 'Grettefoss Gjestegård'. The food and service is the greatest in the country. It's a local place, not like the 'fancy' ones in the cities. Food, medium price (compared to other Norwegian rest.), rooms (or cabins if you want some cheaper sleeping). Located right next to a great river (fishing !), only 2 hours busdriving from the Capital Oslo. Steak (ok, maybe boring - but it tastes wonderful.BUT, - you MUST save som room for their lovely homemade Caramelpudding. You want find any better.

Restaurant food in Norway is...

by Irenoghege

Restaurant food in Norway is generally not very famous for being the best. It doesn't taste much at all. If you are brave and wish for a food experience, try traditional norwegian 'homemade' food; like smalahove (sheep-head), rømmegraut (sour cream porridge), raspeball (balls made from potatoes) and whatever you do - don't forget the brown goat cheese. All these meals might taste weird and even awful first time, but give them a second or third try and you might even like them... FISH: Along this long coastline you should eat fresh fish as much as you can. Stay away from the over-produced salmon, and try out the many different species from the ocean prepared in different ways.

A place where we had a really great dinner isCAFÉ OPERA (Bergen)All right, I have to admit that - being budget travellers - we haven't tried so many restaurants so as to objectively assess them, but this one was really nice and inexpensive (relatively at least). GRILLED SALMON with rosé pepper sauce, broccoli and potatoes (Nkr 98)

This is not a restaurant tip, I would just like to draw your kind attention to the fact that no visit to Norway is complete without trying some Norwegian seafood. Your best bet would be one of the fish markets where you can get lots of gastronomic delights, includingFresh Shrimps (Reker)

by MProcher

Don't know a favourite restaurant in Norway but where ever you go try to eat fish! It's the cheapest dish you can get and even the best. The fish is allways fresh and normally of a very good quality, much better than anything else you can get in your own country imported from Norway or any other destination.
