Flekkefjord is another one of those cute little towns along the south coast of Norway. I would say it is the most westernly one, as I concider the next town towards Stavanger, Egersund, to be the most southern town on the west coast ;-)

Flekkefjord is appr. 2 hours away from Stavanger by car, train or bus. If you are in a hurry, take road E39, do you have plenty of time and want to stop at scenic viewpoints, take the outer road: no 509 from Stavanger around the Hafrsfjord to Sola, then 510 and 507 until you get to 44, follow 44 all the way to Flekkefjord (or you could go by road 44 all the way from Stavanger). I have done both, and I absolutely prefer the outer way!

This time i took the train. On my way to Brøsjø or Oslo I have travelled this distance numerous times, and I travel the part Stavanger - Sandnes / Bryne frequently. But when the goal was Flekkefjord something strange happened: It was like seeing everything the first time! The first part of the journey goes through the flat areas of Jæren, with the old stone walls separating acre lots and the ocean at a distance, then it gets closer to the ocean and goes through the rocky parts of southern Jæren. Until Egersund the line runs quite close to road 44. After Egersund the line turns inland, follows road 42 to Helleland and runs in parallell with E39, through the steep valley Drangsdalen; a breathtaking view! The closest station to Flekkefjord is Sira, from where there is a bus connection, appr. 25 minutes, down to Flekkefjord.

The best part for me though, was that they still (until 1 january) use the old trainsets on this service: Locomotive El 18, passanger cars type B5 and restaurant car BC3 :-)

    Path along Gandsfjorden

The linked map shows the walking / biking path around the areas Rosenli and Godalen in Storhaug, Stavanger east. If you are on foot, I suggest you go by bus no 4A or 4B marked Rosenli to "Ryfylkegata", cross the street and walk between the buildings, keep to the right and you will come to Breivig, a small harbour and some gas storage tanks. The path marked by a thinner green line (and partly by the thick green line) takes you along Gandsfjorden all the way around the peninsula. When you get to Strømvigveien, continue along the "fjord" / harbour Hillevågsvatnet (Strømvigveien - Paradisveien) to the bottom, you are then close to the railway station.

    Festivals: Mai Jazz Festival

  • Each May, Stavanger hosts several of the most well-known jazz artists in the world. The venues are spread out through the town for a long weekend, packed with jazz shows. Each theatre is different, and Stavangeren, for one, is a hundred year old cubical wood house. The inside is gutted and has seats on the floor and a balcony with more seats. It is effectively a big bass speaker and the musicians love to play there because the sound resonates so well. Seeing a couple of shows there in a year can really lift your spirits to help to see you through the rest of the rainy and cloudy year. 2005's festival featured Joshua Redman's screaming sax, and the bass of Stanley Jordan. How nice it would be to be able to see such shows year round, but for four days it is a slice of pure heaven. Plan to go! Check out my page at www.blacktshirts-stavanger.blogspot.com for my Stavanger Top 10 list and links.

If you have the time, this is a must see in Stavanger. Not may old houses here, Bergen has a lot more, but it's a very welcome break from the city nearby. Cobblestoned streets and narrow alleys make for great photo opportunities.

The lake/pond in the city centre is an excellent place for a stroll. Watch as families feed the pigeons, take a rest from the hustle and bustle, see the swans and ducks, or have a break on the may benches lining the waterside.

  • Its worth standing or sitting outside the cathedral when the bells are ringing. The sound is unusual, haunting and very attractive.

This city has a very nice Dom church. It is one of the few stone churches made in that period. Most churches were made of wood (stavkirken)

On the picture you can see the interior. Big white colums and the wood works are easy on the eyes.
In the back of the church behind the altar is a very nice looking glasstained windeow

I entered the fjord on a ship instead of going by land to the famous "pulpit rock". The fjord is a few miles long and it has amazing views.
