    Stone age cave

Vistehola, also known as Svarthola (The Black Cave) is situated in the neighbouring municipality Randaberg, appr. 20 min. drive from downtown Stavanger. It is not much to see, really, but it gives me a feeling of continuity knowing that some of my ancestors might have lived here 8000 years ago! Sea level was a lot higher by that time, meaning they had immediate access to seafood. It was in fact a two story home with one cave upon the other, housing appr. 25 people. A signpost is put up with information about what the archeologists found when the dug out the cave. The first people settled down in this area appr. 12000 years ago.

If you click the link "Vistehola" on this page you will get a pdf drawing which illustrates pretty good what it must have looked like when people lived here, and the link "Turkart" gives you a map of the area including a pointer to Vistehola.

A bit difficult to find, but it is a nice biking area :-)

    Take a trip to Svarthola

Svarthola means the Black Cave and is nothing else to see than a simple small cave :-)
What is interesting at this cave, is the fact that it was populated 6000 years ago by a group of hunters (25 is the supposed number).
There were found some remains from those times.
What you can find now... some plastic souvenirs lying on the floor. Perhaps some remains from the nowadays picnics of the modern hot dog hunters.
The place is interesting anyway even if it is not so well promoted.

I wish you to have a nice sunny day as I had... If not, I hope that you will be happy to see the photos I made on 16th of April 2008...
