    Telecommunications tower and view point

by Rusket Updated Apr 4, 2011

The telecommunication tower, 78 metres tall and built on Stavanger's highest hilltop 131 meters above sea level, has a fantastic view of Stavanger and it's surroundings. There are two viewing platforms open to the public. Since 2002 it has been decorated as a christmas tree each december, the idea coming from a five year old girl :-)

Ullandhaugtårnet is a nice starting / stopping / ending point for a hike in Sørmarka, and is situated close to the Botanical Garden and the Iron Age Farm. The coffeeshop is open sundays 12 noon to 3 p.m.

13 marble bautas in memory of the 13 petty kings who fought Fairheaded Harald at the Hafrsfjord battle appr. 900 AD are situated close to the tower.

Ullandhaug tower is a Telecommunications tower, built in 1964. The tower sits on a hill, and is 64 metres high. It looked really run-down around the outside, and we thought we wouldn't be able to reach the top, then I found the staircase, and up we went to the viewing platform. Well, it was worth coming because there are marvellous views of Stavanger, Ryfylke and Nordjæren. We could even see an Oil Rig at sea.

On Sundays there is a cafe open inside selling coffee and waffles for sightseers and walkers, with a picnic bench outside. Some athletes were here doing exercises and running around the tracks in the area.
There is a walk around the tower that takes an hour, plus many trails in Sormarka woodland. The Iron age farm and Botanical gardens are also close by.

There is a carpark at the bottom of the hill to the tower, or come by local Bus 4B like we did.
    Distance from Stavanger: 4 km
