The main bus terminal Byterminalen is situated right next to the railway station on the southern side of the pond Breiavannet. The airport shuttle buses as well as long distance buses have their main stops inside the terminal. Local buses stop in the area, but have their main stops downtown Stavanger, that is on the other side of the pond. There is a taxi station between the railway station and the bus terminal.
Schedules for buses, trains and boats can be found on the linked site (norwegian only).

The best and cheapest way to travel around is by bus and Kolumbus is the company covering very well all the area.
If you have in mind to remain here for at least a week, ask for a "Flexi pas".
For a month it cost about 630 NOK (this is about 70 euro) but you can use it everywhere, including for the boats going on surrounding islands.
And more than this with the same ticket, after 17:00 and on weekends, you can travel with your wife and two kids too.
Ask always the driver for details.
If you'll stay here only for a short time, you can buy the normal ticket at the driver.
I thought the Ullandhaug Tower would be nice to visit, but how to get there?
The tourist information centre helped me with that. All we had to do was walk a little past the Breivatnet which is on FV447, and there was a bus stop on the near the corner of FV447 & FV444.

This was STOP 8, and we had to catch BUS 4B to take us there, easy!
All went well, but it took ages and we were getting worried. A lovely Norwegian lady put us at ease and told us where to get off the bus. It turns out we had to travel 4kms from Stavanger, only 10mins by car, but a lot longer by bus.
It was quite a walk to the Tower, and of course, uphill! The buses didn't seem to travel very frequently, so we had to wait quite a while for our return to Stavanger. Make sure you have plenty of time if you are leaving it near to when your Ship departs.
The best way to get around in Stavanger is by using the bus. All the buses are green, which make them easy to spot. The prices are expensive tough. You will have to pay about 3$ for one trip, 1,5$ for a childticket. Altough it is expensive, the bus is reliable. It always gets there just in time, and often too. You should check out their webpage for schedules. www.kolumbus.no
The bus system is probably the best way to get around Stavanger and surrounding cities. It is not hard to understand the map. You can buy a pass at the bus station or just pay as you go. We never paid more than 25 kroners per ride.
The busses is the best way to get around in Norway.
Taxi is expensive!
5km will cost about 200kroners (ca 20euro)
There is good bus connections. They go anywhere. Just go on the right busnumber ;-)
