Silversmith on the silver mountain   Stavanger

Silversmith on the silver mountain, Stavanger

1 Review  This is a nice little goldsmith store. Most jewelry stores here in Stavanger only sell pre-made stuff so you find more or less the same in every store. But in this store you can find special stuff...

No shop, only boat: Lobster directly from the fishermen

by Saagar

Along the coast you may come across fishermen (more often than -women) who haul a catch of crabs and lobster up from traps at the bottom. If you approach them on the quay, the pier or alongside their boat they may be quite happy to sell you some of their catch. Note that there are legal seasons for catching crab and lobster, and size restrictions, too, that the fishermen will know about. These vary from one part of the coast to the other. In Northern Norway you may be able to get (or catch yourself) a King crab, monsters up to 5-6, even 10 kilos. For a good-sized lobster you may have to pay above 120 NOK directly to the fisherman, but that's a pittance compared to where they'll otherwise end up, at restaurant tables.Crab should be cheap.

The Post: Postal services

by Saagar

The Post shouldn't need much description? But, sorry, this is not so: The statal post services are being part-privatised and outsourced and it is beginning to be difficult to find a bone fide post office. One outsourcing takes place as "post i butikk" - having simple postal services located at kiosks, grocery shops, corner stores etc. These sub-offices cannot do advanced postal services. And they are very hard to locate. Very limited visual recognition of the fact the shop has a post office, too. No wonder private postal offices and services are popping up, like Mail Boxes Etc inc.If you are travelling and looking for a post office, or simply for a place where you can buy stamps, use the net to minimize hassles if locals cannot tell you where to find one. The way to do it is to enter www.posten.no, continue to "Finn Posten" and click on your appropriate town on the map or search py...

Mobile fish markets: Monkfish and other fish - a raw deal

by Saagar

A few fish mongers and sea food companies travel directly from the key fishing harbours on the west and north-west coast to the main cities in Norway and sell frozen, salted, dried and smoked fish and whale meat off freezer vans. If you didn't have luck with your own fishing today, or if you are heading home and have capacity to bring fish home, buy from these fish lorries. Note that the fish will be frozen, not fresh as such, and sold in 3 and 5 kg cartons. For tonight's BBQ, buy "kveite" (halibut) or "breiflabb" (monkfish). For your return home the best buys will be the same, especially the monkfish is extremely tasty and versatile (firm, wheat meat). The best buy will invariably be monkfish. Off the lorry the price is about 125 NOK per kg for monkfish (vs 200-250 in a shop), NOK 130 per kg for halibut. Bacalao - dried, salted cod of top quality coomes at NOK 100 per kg.Cheapes will...

Oslo Gardermoen airport tax-free shop: Got a taste for aquavit?

by Saagar

The OSL tax-free airport is the cheapest place to buy aquavit or other alcoholic drinks for your home. The ships bound for Denmark and Germany are slightly more expensive. The OSL shop has a very complete selection of Norwegian drinks. The best aquavit is in my opinion Gilde Non Plus Ultra.Next thereafter Gammel Opplandsk. The most popular one is the Linie-aquavit. Its taste is a less refined and smooth one, rather sharp-tasting, heavy on the cumin. You can also get some fruit destillates etc. here. Depends on the quality you are looking for. About 120 NOK per litre Linie Aquavit

Amobil.no, Finn.no, QXL: Have SIM card, need telephone?

by Saagar

Norway has a huge turnover in mobile phones, which means that you can get a really quite new, cheap used mobile phone including guarantee (not expired) by searching the web-based 2nd hand markets. Mobile phones in Norway have a 5-year guarantee. Statistically, there are between four and five million 2nd hand unused mobile phones laying around in Norway... Last year Norwegians bought 2 million new mobile phones (we are 4.5 million people..).When 3G phone penetration gets serious the current phones will predicatbly be discarded en masse. Just watch out! So easy to buy a next-to-new phone for your sim-card!The web-based markets have ads where you can find what you want and make an appointment directly with the individual seller or company. Just click your way.

Norvegian souvenirs

by novsco61

If you would like a special souvenir of your trip to Norway, there are many possibilities available. Handicraft shops selling traditions items as well as newer designs inspired by the old styles are found in both towns and villages. Popular souvenirs from Norway include knitted sweaters, cardigans, gloves and mittens, pewter, silverware, porcelain, hand-painted wooden articles, goat and reindeer skins, woven wall hangings, furs, needlework, glassware and ceramics.

Waht type of souvenir?

by daarth

I often get the question, what type of souvenir is typical for Norway?Several things would be typical, depending on what you like. I would say the most typical is probably a troll figure. You can get them in all sizes and in all price ranges from the little plastic one to the hand-carved one in wood. Another typical craft is tinwear. They are not cheap, but you can get a nice Viking boat in tin.
