Silversmith on the silver mountain   Stavanger

Silversmith on the silver mountain, Stavanger

1 Review  This is a nice little goldsmith store. Most jewelry stores here in Stavanger only sell pre-made stuff so you find more or less the same in every store. But in this store you can find special stuff...

Helios: Ecologically produced foodstuff

by Saagar

For ecologically grown foods, local as well as imported, try Helios. Helios is linked to the biodynamic movement that may exclude other products. They have several shops around Norway, mainly located in the bigger cities. Check www.helios.noRegular farms also produce ecologically/organically (no chemical fertilizer/pesticides etc). These products are either sold through regular outlets - any supermarket would have them - or farmers' markets and directly from farms as advertised along roads or in newspapers. Vheck for the "Debio" mark, which is the national authority approving organically grown foods.

Freia Chocolate: Why do people love to live in Norway?

by YokuMoku

It is because of the Freia chocolate from the happy Norwegian cows that graze in the verdant hills amidst the fjords. Even though people live in remotest parts with a harsh winter and are always full of suspicion, they have the greatest treasure on earth, Freia chocolate! That is at least what my favorite Freia chocolate TV advertisement tries to depict. ;-)

Dale Sweater, Freia Chocolate, Trolls, Wooden Cups: Souvenir Shopping in Norway

by YokuMoku

Norway is an expensive country, but there are many relatively affordable souvenirs that are uniquely Norwegian you can buy here. The best buys are:Dale sweater, Freia milk chocolate from Norwegian happy cows, Stabburet canned mackerel, Moller's Dobbel cod lever oil capsules that will surely energize you to be the next "bullies." There are several sweater manufacturers out there. However, I find that Dale is the most well made. The intricate and beautiful patterns usually symbolize Norwegian nature and history. Choose sweaters with windproof layer, they are much warmer.Dale sweaters are relatively expensive. However, if you buy them outside Norway, they will be much more expensive. The cheapest place to buy Dale sweaters, very popular items during Winter Olympics, is at www.sweater.no that offers free shipping internationally. You cannot find cheaper place anywhere else. Fresh food

by wyagi6

When buying fresh fruit and vegetables in Norwegian supermarkets, check the produce very carefully before purchase. The quality varies considerably and is often poor. Vegetables seem to go limp and inedible within two days of purchase. Apples often develop brown patches and sag in a similar amount of time. I have bought cherries that were furry and rotten the next day. Potatoes are often soft and spongy. The best advice though, is to buy from an outdoors market. The stallholders sell really fresh produce that will keep for a few days.

Norway Designs: Looking for high-end Scandinavian designs?

by YokuMoku

I notice that each town, even a small town of 2000, has its own "glassmagasinet," a store that showcases high-end Scandinavian dinnerware and household items. Usually these family-owned stores have been there for generations and pass down from one generation to the other. In Oslo, the patriarch of this high-class store is Norway Designs, right in the center of Oslo shopping district near Stortinget. There you can find items from Figgjo, Georg Jensen, Iittala, Jacob Jensen, Kosta Boda, Marimekko, Orrefors, Paustian, Rosendahl, and its ilks. Norway Designs is a very comprehensive store that includes stationary department stocking diverse paper and stationary, jewelry, carpet, etc. Norway Designs also owns Tannum Furniture and Textile which are located nearby. The last time I was there, Tannum was still managed by Mrs. Liesel Boman's husband. Norway Designs itself is now managed by Mrs....

Any souvenir shops: Troll Galore I

by YokuMoku

One of the souvenirs you can buy from Norway is trolls, usually hand painted in Norway, not in China or Bangladesh or Honduras. You can find different kinds of trolls, from the scary to the funny ones. Prices differ from one tourist souvenir shop to the other. Unless you do not have time, you better compare prices before you buy.I don't like these trolls because they are not nice to look at, but I will certainly will buy the ugliest and scariest troll to scare ger4444. For better or worse, these trolls are certainly one of the typical Norwegian souvenirs you can buy to impress (or perhaps scare) your friends, families, and especially your in-laws you do not get along with back home. How's that? Trolls of all kinds and shapes.

Stabburet Mackerel in Tomato Sauce: Mackerel as Souvenir

by YokuMoku

This Stabburet canned mackerel in tomato sauce will provide you with a delicious healthy practical cheap meal while you are travelling on a shoestring. You can eat the mackerel out of the can with bread or rice, whatever you fancy. You can also buy this very-affordable made-in-Norway mackerel as a gift for your friends and families back home. But if they grow up in the beef culture, you better make sure first if they like to eat fish. Otherwise, they will not eat this mackerel.Best brand to buy: StabburetPrice: 10NOK, 170 gramIngredients:Mackerel fillet (70%), tomato paste, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, antioxidant.Energy: 283 kcal per 100 gram

Moller's Dobbel: Cod Liver Oil as Souvenir? What a Genuine Idea!

by YokuMoku

One joke I love is "Boller tar Moller" which means "Bullies take Moller."The joke is in a way true because people who take Moller's Dobbel, a high concentrate of fish oil that contains Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A and D, become more energetic. I particularly like the Moller's Dobbel with vitamin A and D. I have tried the one with Amino Acid and vitamin B12, but does not feel energize by it.To my surprise, this fish oil concentrate is a favorite souvenir among Chinese visitors. They buy lots of these fish oil tablets as gifts for their families and friends at home. It never crossed my mind that Norwegian fish oil tablets were a famous souvenir for tourists. But, ok, this can be a unique gift to bring home. So if you fancy some, you can buy them for 30NOK at Rimi in Oslo. Beware, you will be the next bully! From petermoller.no:Even if you have a healthy lifestyle, it can be difficult...

Several; photo, computer, other consumer shops: Electronics

by Saagar

Because this odd country is not a member of the EU, there are not the customs barriers against the Far East such as EU has. That makes cameras, computers and other consumer electronics relatively cheap compared to the rest of Europe. It doesn't really pay for Norwegians to do this shopping abroad anymore, except in places where there is a huge market and stiff competition and low wages such as New York's camera shops. About the same as the duty-free prices in Amsterdam Airport - but you do need to look around a little first.
