Røros Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • Røros Church was built in 1784, and is the only stone building in the old centre of Røros. The church is situated on a small hill above the town centre, and can be seen from most of the surrounding area.

The first church in Røros was built in 1650, only four years after the first smelting hut had been built - but after 130 years the church had to be replaced by a new and bigger one. Today's church is Norway's fifth largest, and seats around 1600. The construction of the church was paid for by Røros Copper Works - and you'll notice the symbol of the Copper Works on the church tower, just above the clock.

The church is considered to be one of the most important church buildings in Norway, and is something of a symbol of Rørøs. (If you show a random Norwegian a pic of this church, "everyone" would be able to tell you which church it is!;o) Guided tours are available year-round.

    Røros Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Røros Museum, located in a reconstructed smelting hut, focuses mainly on the history of Røros as a mining town. The museum, situated by some massive slag heaps, displays accurate models of the machines and equipment used during the 333 years of mining in the area. You'll also learn more about the way people lived in the small mining town.

There are also various art exhibitions at the museum.

Olavsgruva - Olav's Mine - which is situated about 13 km northeast of the town, is another part of Røros Museum. On a guided tour you'll walk approximately 500 metres into the mine, and end up about 50 metres underground. Bring good walking shoes and warm clothes, it's quite cold inside!

Røros museum is open daily between mid-May and mid-October, closed Mondays between October 15th and May 15th.

    Slegghaugan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Close to the Røros Museum, on the other side of the Hyttelva river there is a big "hill" made of sledge.
It is probably the only example of the industrial waste protected as the cultural heritage under UNESCO!

(note the people on top of the "hill" to realize the scale of it)

    Inside the Olavsgruva
  • Tip Rating:
  • Olavsgruva mine consist of Nyberget (1650) and Crown Prince Olav's Mine, with the museum built over the mine shaft. Visitors are guided 50 metres below ground level.
No matter whether the outside temperature is -25 or +25, the temperature in the mine is constant throughout the year: 5 degrees C.
(Warm clothes and good shoes are essential!)

    Walk around Røros
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the top of Sleggveien you will find some of the oldest and smallest houses in the town. Today they are part of the Museum.

The church tower dominates the town. The church was completed in 1784 and it is the fourth largest church in Norway with approximately 1600 seats.

Today's big wooden building that houses the copper production museum is a reconstruction of the old smelting works that was destroyed in fire in 1975. The smelting works at this place dates back to 1646, and Smelthytta is a reconstruction upon the drawings from 1888.

    The Slag Heaps
  • Tip Rating:
  • When arriving at Røros, the first thing you'll notice is the huge slag heaps on the edge of the town. The slag heaps consist of waste material from the smelting process - in copper smelting, the copper flows as a liquid to the bottom of the furnace, and the slag accumulates on top of the copper and can be removed.

The slag heaps are located near the Hitter river - where the main smelting hut of Røros Copper Works was situated. This smelting hut was in use for over 300 years (1646 - 1953), and the town of Røros grew around it.

The slag heaps at Røros are protected by law, and are an important part of Røros as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the largest wooden churches in Scandinavia
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Røros Kirke is the largest wooden church in Scandinavia, seating over 1000 people. The whole town including the church was built by a copper mining company. To this day on the steeple of the church you can see the company logo. Could you imagine today Microsoft building a community with a church and having a Windows logo on the steeple!!?

  • Directions: Center of Town....you can see the steeple for miles
