OK, this is a daytrip as it is a train journey out of town (75 km) but I have to mention it as it seems totally forgotten in all guide books on Norway. Maybe the travel writers think Norway has so many other scenic places and this is of course true but if you find yourself in Trondheim for a longer time, I think a trip here would be rewarding. In winter, you can go skiing, whilst in summer, the contrast view across the high fells and into the low and fertile valleys are magnificent. Not that many foreigners either as everyone is on their way to either Jämtland in Sweden (only 20 km away) or to Trondheim. The train journey itself is nice, with waterfalls cascading down mountains and you might want to go fishing or riding when you arrive.
