The Airport of Trondheim Vaernes is connected with Oslo and all the main Norwegian towns with SAS Braathens and Winderoe. In the departure lounge you can see a very interesting show about the history of the airport and flying in the town of Trondheim.
During the summer season is very common to see charter fly to come from all Europe.

Arriving to Trondheim airport almost means arriving to Hell. In order not to scare English-speaking visitors they didn’t name it after nearby small town, but named it Værnes, leaving the Hell sign at the nearby train station interesting only to American tourists that want a photo in front of it.

SAS Braathens, Norwegian and Wideroe fly to/from Værnes, linking it to other cities in Norway. There are almost hourly departures to Oslo Gardermoen throughout the day. SAS flies to Copenhagen and KLM has direct flights to Amsterdam, other international flights being mainly tourist and charter lines to Spain or Italy.

From the airport you can take the airport bus (“Flybussen”) that leaves every 15-20 minutes and stops at Nedre Elvehavn, Sentralstasjon and Torvet as well as in front of the most centrally-located hotels, last stop being at the Lerkendal stadium.

The ride to the center lasts about 30 minutes and costs 65 kr (Sept. 2003). For detailed schedules consult the link below.

Vænes Airport is just 35km NE of Trondheim and has two SAS flights daily from Copenhagen. There are 40 flights daily to Oslo.

The airport bus runs every 15 minutes to downtown Trondheim.

  • There are direct international scheduled flights from these cities to Trondheim:
Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Praha, London, Murcia, Alicante, Dubrovnik, Stockholm. There are charter flights to many other places in southern and eastern Europe. Getting to and from Trondheim is a breeze.
If travelling from an international destination and need to transit before Trondheim, try to do it in Copenhagen. Try to avoid Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) and it's abysmal baggage handling in transit. Trondheim is a very small and convenient airport - despite it's location in the community called Hell!

If you board an overnight train from Bodø (North of Norway) to Trondheim, the train you're on will pass through Hell at around midnight. Well, there's no need to panic, Hell is just a little town in Trondheim with nothing much to see apart from offering you a lame joke. Well, that's what I did, I took the overnight train trip from Bodø and since it lasted some 10 hours, I slept like a baby all the way and missed the opportunity to see Hell.

    Cost
The train fare from Bodø to Trondheim costs 861NOK ($122) one-way but since I had a Scanrail pass, I paid only only USD$20 for a sleeper or bunk bed on the train. It's good value for money as the beds were clean and comfy and the price included a hearty breakfast on the train cafe.
If you're travelling from Oslo to Trondheim , it'll cost around 748NOK ($106) one-way. Visit www.nsb.no for more details on the train schedule and the scanrail pass.

  • Whichever way you arrive will be scenic. I came from Sweden, across the fells with the so called Nabotåget (neighbour train) between Östersund and Trondheim but there are also trains from Oslo, Røros and other places. If you have less money and more time, the Norwegian bus network is excellent and takes you from places like Oslo, Bergen and the far north of Norway.

The ships of Hurtigruten are a great way to explore Norway and every day of the year 2 ships will arrive in Trondheim :
At 06.30 am the southbound ship will dock and stay untill 10.00am
At 08.00 am the northbound ship will arrive and leave again at 12.00 noon.
Walking-distance from the ship to the cathedral is about 30 minutes and you will walk most of this time through the interesting centre of the city and only the first 800 meters through the port-area.
When you intend to explore the cathedral, crown jewels, Gamle Bybro, bike-lift etc. as shown in this page, you have to do this on your own, and should also have time enough for almost everything EXCEPT the Ringve-museum.
The Ringve-museum is a bit outside and also opens most of the year only for Hurtigruten.

Transportation inside of Norway is a bit tricky and the trainsystem has only a few connections between big cities.
I had to take the BUS from Trondheim to Bergen, that distance is about 700 km, and the comfortable bus left Trondheim at 08.00pm and you arrive the other morning at 09.45 in Bergen. There will be many stops for 10 and even more minutes at cafes, petrol-stations ect. along the way, where you can eat or drink something and in the morning you will take a ferry, that also has a restaurant onboard.
I was lucky to have the total last row for myself to sleep on and most of the time there were only 8 or 10 other people on that bus.
The ticket was 560 NOK (=64 euros), that is about half of the price for the ordinary train Trondheim-Oslo-Bergen (= 1050 NOK) that is leaving at around 8.25 am and you arrive in Bergen late at night. A sleeping-compartment for the nightrain would be 850 NOK extra (=100 euros)
The central bus-station is next to the central trainstation, buy tickets at the counter or the busdriver, big lockers (I had 1 suitecase + 2 rucksacks and it was big enough) for your luggage are available for 50 NOK and you need coins for them.
There is also a selfservice restaurant in the station, they serve breakfastbuffet for 89 NOK from 07.00 - 09.00 am.
Toilets will cost 10 NOK and you need a coin !

On foot: Crossing the intersections diagonally

  • Some of the intersections can be crossed diagonally, but be carefull which intersections you do that. It's not allowed in all intersections. Some intersections will only allow you to pass one way at the time, while cars drive in parallell. See if the pedestrian light is green in both ways before doing a diagonal crossing.

  • You can rent a bike for free (just a little depositum)

Find one of the stalls present all over the town pay the deposit, and be on your way.

You can see where all the other stalls are at the stall, so you just have to find one of them first.

Great, but is only open during the summer.
