Urnes stave church is located in Luster county on the south side of the fjord.The church is on UNESCO`s world heritage list and the oldest in Norway. Specially interesting because some of the wood carvings are believed to origin from an older pegan godshouse. A Hov.
On The island Selja , by the town Selje , you will find theese ruins of the once so big monastery Selja. The monastery were founded over the legend of Sancta Sunniva , an Irish kingsdaughter called Sunniva and her brother Albanus who stranded here with to ships , while fleeing from enemies in Irland. Dayly excursions from the mainland SELJE during the tourist season.
This is why I came to Norway - the romantic beauty of the fjords. It's some of the most awe-some scenery I've ever experienced. It's worthwhile to take the Sognefjord boat all the way from Flåm back to Bergen. You'll see so much more than if you just "do" the abbreviated section of the trip which most tourists see as part of the "Norway in a Nutshell" excursion.
Up in the mountainside you my see the cave were Sunniva and her brother Albanus hided from the viking king Håkon Jarl , and were buried allive by a rock slide.
Sognefjorden is the longest and also deapest fjord in Norway , in my opinion also the most beautiful.
