About half way up the Lærdal valley in the little village of Borgund, you find one of the best examples of the Norwegian stave churches. This unique architecture in wood from the middle ages has survived for almost a thousand years. It was even in use up till about a hundred years ago when they built a "new" church next to it. On my last visit, they were having the Sunday service there, and not a tourist in sight :-)
Fondest memory: What also makes it special, must be the magic nature surrounding the place.
