Admiralen: Mixed chinese / malaysian and norwegian menu

Admiralen

The little red house in front is a PUB, behind you can see the outdoor part of the restaurant. It is quite nice to sit there on nice summer days, to watch the boats on the fjord, and the busy taxi boats and ferries going to and from all the time.

The restaurant entrance is on the other side of the brick building. The menu is mixed chinese / malaysian and norwegian. OK, but not more than just OK.

A pub, traditional english style, who also offer pizza. OK ambient, but I hate the big screen television set in the corner. Actually, I think there are two. But it's OK if you don't want to miss a football game.

Skaarups: Fantastic cinnamon-roll and ice-cream!

Skaarups is a small bakery in the middle of Kragerø town. Situated close to the "main" street in a wooden white building with tables outside. They serve some fantastic Cinnamon rolls, also called Engler (Angels). They are not as syrupy and buttered as Cinnabon (the American cinnamon chain) but they're the best alternative in Scandinavia. Huge, doughy, fresh and soft, with lots of white frosting and cinnamon. Price: 25 NOK. They are also well-known for some fantastic Italian-inspired icecream with mouthwatering flavors.

Favorite Dish: You have to try the 'cinnamon'! They also have other kinds of bakery products; cakes, buns, bread, sandwiches..etc

Kaffe og Juice: Cozy and little café away from the crowds

Enjoying a strawberry smoothie and a sandwich

In the summertime the narrow streets of Kragerø is filled with people and restaurants are packed. 'Kaffe og Juice' (which translated means just Coffee and Juice) is a small and intimate café located in the middle of town, but it's not easy to spot as it is situated away from the main street. When life in Kragerø gets to hectic it's nice to have a coffee, juice, salad or sandwich from these honest people ("We don't have the watermelon smoothie because it didn't taste good"). I think it's a mother-daughter-business. The coffees are well-made in huge cups and take-away is possible as well. The prices are reasonable, and you can either sit inside in the dark-lit café with a couple of deep velvet couches, or enjoy your coffee at one of their tables outside.

Favorite Dish: The Caffe Mocca was delicious served in a huge cup!

Kaffe og juice: My favorite

Kaffe & juice

Norwegian traditional cooking is boring! In the past 30 or so years a lot of chefs have gotten inspired by french, italian and other international cooking. And luckily enough we have immigrants from all over the world who serve all kind of delicious meals.

This little place is a coffee- and juicehouse run by a norwegian woman, who also serves delicious open sandwiches. Unfortunately it seems like the residents of Kragerø prefer junkfood: On my last visit it was closed, the opening hours are considerably reduced since my previous visit. I hope the tourist season leeds to longer opening hours!

Favorite Dish: Open sandwich with chicken and a lot of other good stuff and mocca coffee.

Sjøboden: Fast Food

Sjboden

We have all the big american junk food chains here in Norway. I have not seen any of them in Kragerø, but that does not mean you can't get junk food. Like here, at Sjøboden. You can buy it as take away from outside, or you can choose to sit down at one of the few tables inside.

Upstairs there is a semi fisherman style cafe, where they have a "plate of the day" in addition to food from downstairs. The plate of the day is some kind of traditional norwegian food, like my mother learned to cook it in domestic school before WWII, (which to me is equivalent with boring). There is also a veranda which is quite popular on warm summer days.

Somehow I have missed this one. I always thought it was a part of the pub next door! Last time I was in Kragerø I was starving, but they were not open yet, and I (as usual) ended up in Sjøboden. After my visit to Kragerø I have heard and read a lot about this restaurant, and from what I have learned, it is absolutely worth a visit.

They know how to prepare a steak! The ambient ... oh, well, if you like old western saloons, you will love it. But kind of weird to find it here, in a south-eastern coastal town in Norway.

I don't know the name of this one, it is right by The Appendix, in the center of Kragerø, with a nice view of the quay area. There are lots of them, especially during summer.
