The ferry runs appr. once every hour during the period 01.05 - 31.10., a couple of times daily in november. In december you have to order transport one day ahead.
Starting point on the east side is Sundsodden in Nissedal: 21 km north of Treungen on road 41, that is you have to turn left (if you are going north) and drive a kilometer or so on a smaller road to get to the ferry. On the other side you find the small community Fjone, where the ferrywoman has her own knitware shop and cafe :-)

There is probably a way to get there by bus. But the easiest way is to go by your own / hired car, bike or motorcycle:
* From Oslo or Haugesund on E134: Onto no 41 at Brunkeberg, continue south until you get there, appr. 50 km (58 to Treungen).
* From Kristiansand: Road no 41 past Hynnekleiv, continue north until you get there, appr. 130 km (127 to Treungen).
* From Arendal / E18 by Arendal: Road no 42 to Hynnekleiv / Svenes, turn right onto road no 41 and continue north until you get there, appr. 175 km.
* From Kragerø / Gjerdemyra at E18: Road no 38 past Drangedal, turn left onto no 358 at Bostrak, appr. 100 km.
* From Skien / Porsgrunn: Road no 356 to Drangedal, continue road no 38 to Bostrak, turn left onto road no. 358.
Road no 41 is the main road through Nissedal, it goes north - south on the east side of lake Nisser.
