Norwegian Folk Museum/ Norsk Folkemuseum

by iwys

This is a wonderful outdoor museum where more than 150 traditional buildings, including churches and farmhouses from all over Norway, have been re-erected in a woodland setting. The collection was started back in 1894 to preserve the country's rural architectural heritage. There are also displays of rural activities here, including baking, pottery, weaving folk dancing. The area of the museum is so green and well vegetated that I saw country birds like Spotted Flycatchers nesting here. The undoubted highlight of the collection, however, is the stunning, thirteenth century Gol Stave Church: possibly the greatest wooden building in Europe.

Oslo

by MichaelFalk1969

The capital of Norway has much to see and deserves at least 2 1/2 - 3 days of your visit. You should not miss - the Vigelandspark- the Bygdoy museums (Folkemuseum, Viking museum, Fram museum)- the Royal Palace- the harbour and the Akershus fortress- the National Gallery- the Munch museumThat said: What struck me in Oslo was that sometimes ultramodern architecture is built right next to old buildings in a way that does not exactly fit. So Oslo has - in my opinion - not the beauty of Prague or Venice (to name an example), but it still is a very, very interesting city.

Norwegian stave churches

by evaanna

When in Norway, don't miss their wonderful stave churches. Built between 1130 and 1350, they boast some real masterpieces of medieval craftsmanship and some are still used for worship. Of about 1000 stave churches in Norway in the Middle Ages, only 28 remain, yet none of the same type of churches in the rest of Europe has survived. The best-known of Norwegian stave churches, Borgund Stavkirke, built in 1180, is situated in Laerdal by Road E16, or rather it was by that road when we went that way the first time in 2001. We visited it again last year but the road had by then been put in a tunnel bypassing the church so that you must now take one of the minor roads to get there. Perhaps this was done to protect the church from pollution caused by the passing cars but some tourists may now overlook it in a hurry. A new huge Borgund Visitor Centre has also been built to provide information on...

Munch Museum - Oslo

by MichaelFalk1969

The Munch Museum made it into the news a few years ago as Edvard Munchs most famous painting "The Cry" was robbed at gunpoint from the museum. I was lucky to see it while it was still on display in the museum. Now, the robbers have been caught and put on trial, and the "Scream" and the "Madonna" will finally return. The Munch museum is very worthwhile and puts many lesser-known yet still fascinating works of Munch on display, + interesting facts on the life and career of Munch. A must-see if you are in Oslo.

Change money

by Saagar

Norwegian banknotes are bland and nondistinct, but you got to have them while you're here. The currency is rather strong, and that turns everything here quite expensive. There were days when I was a studnet in the US when a dollar cost me NOK 11. Nowadays if you give me a dollar I hand you back 6,2 NOK - not because I am stingy...On top of this bad exchange rate, the banks throw a stiff fee on top of your exchange, upto NOK 35 for a simple exchange. On top of that again, the banks barely keep open.Furthermore, most Norwegian supermarkets and groceries do not take credit cards, only debit cards.Ok, let me get into a constructive modus here: Bring a debit card and a credit card, and use them on ATMs to botain Norwegian currency. The fee is less than doing it over the counter. At Oslo Central Railway Station there is a Forex office where you can do cash transactions, and there is no fee,...

Jostedaalsbreen National Park

by MichaelFalk1969

Ice is the main attraction of the Jostedaalsbreen. Jostedaalsbreen is a vast glacier region in the central Fjordland region, where you can do guided glacier hikes (book with the visitor centre) or else just have a look at them from below. The most popular and probably most-photographed glacier of this area is the Nigardsbreen, with a pretty lake just in front of the glacier.

The Royal Palace is usually not open to the public (and if it is, it is rather difficult to obtain tickets), but it is possible to watch the changing of the guards. The charming park next to the palace is open to the public.
