Borgund Stave - church / Stabkirche
Borgund Stavechurch is dating back to the year 1324 according to the history-books, but scientists found out that the wood used to build that church was cut in the winter 1180/81, so the church is obviously much older.Stave-churches are built similar to ships upside down and here in Borgund stabkirche / stavechurch you will also see the dragons that were built at all ends of the church-tops, similar to the dragons at the bow and the end of a viking-ship.Giant wooden columns (stave is the norwegian word for mast or column) are holding the whole construction of the church and all of that wooden construction is done vertically, not horizontally like in blockhouses for instance.
