Borgund Stavechurch is dating back to the year 1324 according to the history-books, but scientists found out that the wood used to build that church was cut in the winter 1180/81, so the church is obviously much older.Stave-churches are built similar to ships upside down and here in Borgund stabkirche / stavechurch you will also see the dragons that were built at all ends of the church-tops, similar to the dragons at the bow and the end of a viking-ship.Giant wooden columns (stave is the norwegian word for mast or column) are holding the whole construction of the church and all of that wooden construction is done vertically, not horizontally like in blockhouses for instance. To get an overview of the things you can see and do - according to the local tourist offices - you should access the tourism umbrella organisation Nasjonalparkriket.All three national parks can be accessed by a combination of train and bus through Gudbrandsdalen/Dovre railway line and side valleys.Lom, Sognefjellshytta and Gjendesheim serve as roadheads for Jotunheimen from the eastern side, Rondane can be accessed via Otta/Mysusæter, and Dovre via Dombås/Hjerkinn/Kongsvoll stations.

Rock Carvings of Alta

Alta Museum is famous for its rock carvings, dating from circa 4200 BC to 500 BC, which are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In the area of the the musuem there are about 3000 rock carvings dating from the Stone Ages to the Iron Ages (6000 - 2500 years ago). The rock carving are located on a wide area and there are many levels of them: little by little the sea level went down people realized the rock carvings more lower. All the carvings are red (which probably was the original coluor) and there is a path 3 Km long which allow you to make a wonderful trips in the hisotry. The most common rappresentation on the rock carvings are: animals, women, men, ships and reindeers.More information on my Finnmark page.

Oslo was the final destination of our journey and we only had very little time there. We only had the morning to have a look at the fanous Oslo cityhall, the old fortress and the harbour and then did a tiny little bit of sightseeing while walking from the hotel to the central station.I have built a small Oslo page, so if you are interested, feel free to have a look there for some more tips and details!

Verdens Ende, Norway

Verdens Ende means ”The End of the World”. It is a 30 minute drive from Tønsberg, on the southernmost tip of the island of Tjøme. Verdens Ende offers a great opportunity for swimming and fishing .Als one can reach Verdens Ende by boat. Ende you must walk from One can see the flashing coastal beacon from 1932 here, a landmark of Verdens Ende. You can see across the ocean towards Færder lighthouse, which was built in 1857 from the suspension bridge that leads out to the rocks.
