Norway in a Nutshell

by travelfrosch

This tour is certainly no secret, but it's touristy for a reason. If you have a limited time to spend in Norway, this is THE trip to take. The most important part of the "tour" (note this is not an organized tour) is a train/boat/bus journey from Myrdal to Flåm to Gudvangen to Voss. The trip can be taken in either direction, and is possible as a round trip from Oslo or Bergen, or as a detour enroute from one to the other. NOTE: All trains, boats, and buses are scheduled to coincide with one another. In 1997, I traveled from Oslo to Bergen via the Nutshell, spent a few hours in Bergen, then took the night train back to Oslo. Sadly, no photos from this trip; the photos you see are from a trip in 2004.From Myrdal, you take the Flåmsbana down the steep rack railway to fjordside in Flåm. From there, you board a boat through the Sognefjord and Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen (to say the scenery is...

Dalen Hotel

by Cristian_Uluru

The fantastic Dalen Hotel was built in 1894, its architecture inspired by Norway's historic stave churches. From the very beginning, it was an imposing structure, built in the "dragon style", the Norwegian version of the "Swiss chalet" architecture popular throughout Europe at that time.In the first years of 20th century Dalen Hotel has been host to many imporatant people as well as King Haakon, the King of Siam, Leopold of Belgium and a myriad of other prominent Europeans. The era of greatness enjoyed by Dalen Hotel lasted for over fifty years until the Second World War. The Germans confiscated the hotel during the war and at the time, many of the hotel's guests and original inventory disappeared. The hotel was indeed in a sorry state following a number of years of neglect and decay and for a long time there was not much hope for this once so distinguished building. Towards the end of the...

The Oslo-Florø bus route - the big fjords access

by Saagar

There are daily buses from Oslo to Florø via Valdres, Tyin and Lærdal, Sogndal, Jølster and Førde before Florø. The journey is about 10 hours. You can stop just about everywhere along the route, but expect pick-ups to happen at more limited number of bus stops.

Polaria Museum

by GypsyLightChaser

Great Museum about the Polar with seals playing in the water and other marine life in the area. One of the "must do" activities while there is to see Ivo Caprino's beautiful film about Svalbard - Many scenes shot from a helicoptor. On a large screen you will fly over the landscapes that fill you with excitement. See the animals that inhabit the area with soothing music in the background. I suggest watching this at the end of your stroll through the enhibits. Copies availble for purchase.Entrance fees: Adults NOK 80,-Children NOK 40,-Senior citizens NOK 65Students NOK 55Family NOK 190 (2 adults + up to 3 children)Opening hours: May 18th - Aug. 15th: 10 - 19Aug. 16th - May 16th: 12 - 17Polaria also has a café with a nice gift shop. I found lots of goodies while shopping. It is expensive but worth it.

Fjaerland

by munki

Fjaerland is one of the most picturesque villages in Norway. This beautiful peaceful little village with no more than 300 habitants is located at the end of the Fjaerlandsfjord and it is famous for its second-hand book shops and magnificent mountain scenery. More than 200.000 books are sold in several barns and boat houses in the village. To reach the Norwegian Book town you either take a ferry or you will have to drive the toll private road between Sogndal and Lunde. Note the road between Skei and Fjaerland is free of charge. The Norsk Bremuseum (Norwegian Glacier Museum) which is located outside the village on highway 5 it is a must visit if you are interested in snow, ice and glaciers.Entrance admission is NOK 80 for adults.

Puffins

by munki

There are between 12-15 millions puffins in the world. 60% of the world population breeds in Iceland.Puffins diet is based on small fish but they can eat crustacean too.Puffin’s peak has specialized to hold fish while the birds are in the ocean. They dig burrows with their bills and feet to breed their chicks. They like to make their burrows in earth on steep sea cliffs where predators can’t reach them. At the end of the burrow there is always a soft nest of hay and feathers.Puffins lay one egg per year and can live up to 20 years.Runde island is one of the best places in Europe to see puffins.

Fjord Horses

by munki

The Norwegian Fjord horse retains much of its ancestor's primitive vigour, as well as the uniform dun coat colour. The modern Fjord horse is compact and strongly muscled, and has short limbs with plenty of bone. The head is wide, with small ears and is of pony type. These days the Fjord is used as a pack horse, in harness, under saddle and for ploughing. It is sound and hardy and can operate on a modest diet.Fjord horses have been successful throughout the world in driving competitions, and their stamina and courage are an asset in long-distance riding.

JOTUNHEIMEN

by mtncorg

Home of the Giants, this mountain region northeast of the Sognefjord - northwest of Lillehamar - is home to Norway's tallest mountains - Galdhopiggen and Glintertind being the highest. This is wild and vast country that is set up for the traveller on foot. You can wander among these mountains for weeks, utilizing the huts system and well-marked trails - or you can wander crosscountry with good map and compass, for the region is above timberline for the most part. See my Jotunheimen pages for more information. See also the website for Den Norske Turistforening - below - and read Andrew Stevenson's book "Summer Lights" which begins with a trek across the Jotunheimen.

HARDANGERVIDDA

by mtncorg

This is the largest mountain plateau to be found in Norway. Most of the vast region is above timberline and you are in tundra, snow and rock (Vidda = tundra). There are well-marked paths and huts set in strategically advantageous positions. Lakes are found throughout. It is an empty terrain that you can find filled with life on closer inspection. The days can definitely be a case of Big Sky Country. The nights can shine with a vast array of stars. Remember, though, the weather can be a factor in your travels - rain, grey and snow. Also, tundra can always mean mosquitos;-/

FANTOFF

by mtncorg

Stave churches are the oldest churches of Norway. Many can be found in various locations of southern Norway. Because they were made of wood, many have burnt over the years. Fantoff, found just outside Bergen, is a glorious example of a Norwegian stave kirke. Dragons bedeck the eaves. It is easy to see the influence of earlier gods and religious thought on the early Christians of the Viking world.
