TORPO

by mtncorg

Another fine example, much simpler in construct, of the Norwegian stave kirke is to be found in Torpo, a small town along one of the main highways - highway 7 - running between Oslo and Bergen. New church sits next to old here. Torpo is near the end of the valley, not far below the tundra of the Hardangervidda beyond. One can sense, in an earlier transportation age, the local insularity in the architecture of the stave church. In between tour buses, quiet returns.

LATEFOSS

by mtncorg

With so much moisture, so many glaciers, such tall mountains, it is only natural that Norway contains vast numbers of waterfalls. One marvellous example is found along the highway coming over the Telemark towards Odda on the Sorfjord. Here two rumbling falls come together right next to the highway, much to the delight of the tourist souvenir shop. Latefoss is a much photographed falls, waters tumbling out of the Hardangervidda above.

The "Troll Wall" from the top

by Saagar

The "Troll Wall" is a much advertised tourist trappy sheer mountain side in Romsdal valley. It's impressive, but go see it from the top. You can lean out ... if you dare... near the "Exit" point in Bruraskaret (where some wild people illegally jump off with a parachute), or proceed even higher up for a full view of the 1700-meter drop down to Romsdal valley. The big wall itself is partly overhanging, with a 1000 meter clean vertical drop, below there is scree. To get to the top in a normal manner - if you do not want to climb - there is a trail of sorts from the top of the Trollstigen road near the bridge. Try to get some info at the Trollstighytta (cafe) before you set off. It's a full day's walk there and back, bring food, water and sturdy shoes in order to cope with scree and uphill terrain.

Sognefjord

by Sharrie

Norway is a land of fjords & ferries. I think I spent more time on ferries in this trip than any other trips I've ever been on. The open sea dorminates... Sognefjord, the longest (204 km!) & deepest (1309 m) but imho the most unimpressive of them all. Luckily for me, it's the 1st one I was on. It gets better day by day :-)

Beautiful Hardengerfjord

by Sharrie

On my 2nd cruise from Bergen, the most spectacular & beautiful sights greeted me the entire day. Again, the fjords are different but with more details & colors. These sceneries are meant to be absorbed into one's memory & system. If it's at all possible, it's best to stay for an entire month in this area.

Molde: Roses & Jazz

by globetrott

Molde is set in one of the most beautiful bays of Norway and you should not miss it, when driving through Norway. From the pier in Molde you will have one of the best panorama-views in Norway: A large bay with hundreds of high mountains and various islands are in that panorama and next to the large hotel you will have the old cannons like in my pics and lots of ships passing by all day long ! And there is a large carparking there as well directely at the hotel and a large shoppingcentre.Dont miss the reflections of the Rica Hotel, as they will give you a lot of great opportunities for special photos of the mountain-panorama of Molde. You can actually walk along the sea in order to get the best views there at the hotel.Hurtigruten will pass through Molde as well and stop for a short time there in both directions.

Atlanterhavsveien - bridge

by globetrott

Atlanterhavsveien - bridge is one of the most spectacular bridges that I ever saw : There are several parking-lots at both sides of the bridge and from each of them that bridge looks completely different - see my extra pics as well. The bridge in my pictures is the highest one of a row of 8 bridges and the only one that is high enough for the local fishermen to sail to their ports underneath.I spent half a day at that bridge to make my pics.-----------------------------------Hurtigruten offers a tour to Kvernes, and to this bridge, including a dinner. They are doing a single stop and you can take a photo from there like my main picture and my last picture here!See more photos of that bridge, when you click on the weblink below !

Northern Lights & Midnight Sun

by Durfun

Both occur in different seasons!Midnight sun starts appearing in the northernmost regions (beyond the Arctic Circle) around end of May. Clearly, days are longer in summer, and it's a summer phenomenon! Towards end of June you don't need to venture too far north to see it.Northern lights are seen in winter/spring. March is considered a good time, as it should not be bitterly cold. But a moonless night is required, and one must ideally wander away from nearby civilisation (require no 'light pollution').From April to October, no chance of Northern lights. Sorry :(But, a similar phenomenon occurs in the Southern hemisphere (dubbed Southern Lights), as they have the opposite season as in Scandinavia. So, theoretically, you could experience both things, but for that have to travel to two extreme locations - Arctic Circle to Antarctic Circle :(

Oslo

by Leipzig

The city is located on the coast at the head of Oslofjord, in the southeast part of Norway. Founded about year 1000. The city was destroyed by fire in 1624. From 1624 to 1924 the city was known as Kristiania in honour of King Christian IV of Denmark who initiated the rebuilding. (Norway became independent in 1905, after having been in union with first Denmark, then Sweden from 1814.) The oldest part of the city, still existing, is found close to Akershus Castle. Ruins of the original city is found further east. Today, there are only 450,000 people living in Oslo.

Narvik

by Leipzig

Narvik has about 20.000 inhabitants and is the most important iron-ore harbour of Norway. In the past years the town has devoloped to a high-technology centre of Norway. The mountainous surroundings attract every winter thousands of visitors to make outdoor activities.
