    Nordkapp
Norway is a huge country – the distance between the southernmost and northernmost points is the same as the distance between south of Norway and Rome. If you have enough time sure it’s great to go around and reach Nordkapp. The coastal steamer along the western coast of Norway is also a memorable experience.
But if you don’t have a month or so, than going all the way to the Nordkapp to pay an entrance to a point that is the northernmost point on European continent doesn’t seem a reasonable decision to me.

If you’re looking for a northern experience visit Lofoten islands instead. With their spectacular landscapes, glacier-carved mountains, small villages, fishing cabins and sand beaches it is sure going to be a memorable journey.

    Midnight sun
It is very light in Scandinavia during the summer, and in northern parts of the country sun never drops below the horizon in midsummer. But you should also know that there is nothing spectacular in this – it is simply an ordinary sun shining even during the night. There are million good reasons to visit Norway, but contrary to majority of tourist brochures I don’t count midnight sun experience within them.

On the other hand, Aurora Borealis is an extraordinary feature and if you’re not afraid of dark and heavy winters it could be one of the reasons to visit Norway in winter months.

    The Ultimate Trap

  • The Ultimate Tourist Trap is as many VT members have found out, the North Cape. There has been a lawsuit against the commericial operators of the North Cape - yes, it's very commercial - because you have to pay a ticket (expensive) to get out to the point. There is a law that grants free access to all public lands without hinderance and this is violated in the interest of commercialism here.
Here's another piece of insight: The North Cape is not the northern-most point of Europe! That honour goes to a neighbouring penninsula called Knivskjellodden, which will also be a much nicer experience. There's a trail out there, and it will be a true wilderness experience.

Simply skip the North Cape and ask for directions to Knivskjellodden at the Honningsvåg tourist office or just about anyone local.

Many penninsulas on the Finnmark coast are nearly look-a-likes of the Nort Cape, and ecologically and geologically they are about the same. For similar "northern feeling" experiences up north, go to any other point jutting out into the sea: Ingoy, Rolvsoy, Soroy and the penninsulas further east of North Cape, too.

    Briksdalsbreen glacier

  • Nice tourist trap, Briksdal - Norway
    Nice tourist trap,
    Briksdal
    by Saagar
Briksdalsbreen is a snout of the Jostedalsbreen glacier between the Sognefjord and Nordfjord. There is a road up from Olden that takes you to a parking lot and tourist facility with stunning views all around. From here you can walk or take a horse cart pulled by a Norwegian breed Fjording horse up to the glacier lake in front of the snout. Absolutely beautiful, but there will be many fellow tourists. Yes, a tourist trap, but a beautiful one.
I happened to visit some friends working there, and we ate at the turist-geared restaurant there. They told me they were a bit tired of the menu's plackard-sized advertised "today's special", pan-fried Olden lake trout simmered in sour cream and with lettuce and field-fresh potatoes. Apparently, the restaurant had found out that tourists only came for the day, so why change the menu? The fish was good, and it is a stunning, genuine tourist trap...

Go there if you are in the neighbourhood, take the horse cart, or walk, and join the others. This is a chance to see one of Norway's fastest flowing glaciers (up to 12 meters/day) up close. If the weather is good, take your time, and see the hanging glacers above, the water falls etc.
Check the following web sites to prime yourself for the experience:
www.briksdalsbre.no, phone to "Destination Briksdal" 57876800, and for regional info: www.nordfjord.no .

From the Briksdalen valley you can scramble up a marked trail along a steep ridge to the north and get up to the Jostedalen ice cap (see my danger tip section) for a splendid view over the ice scenery and the valley.
Hiking into the valley and mountains to the southwest of the Briksdal, you can climb a dramatic, marked trail across to Stardalen. It should be a full day one way. Just north of Briksdalsbreen is the side valley of Brenndalen, with the fast moving and thundering Brenndalsbreen. No tourists here, and the glacier is perhaps even more dramatic than the one in Briksdalen.

Always think twice if it is really necessary to go by ferry. There are hundreds of ferries in Norway and at the end of the trip the sum of money paid for ferries will be the second highest of all expenses. (the first is petrol expenses - if you go by motor-home)

If possible find a road that goes around if only it is not much longer.

  • Nutshell brochure - Norway
    Nutshell brochure
    by Saagar
This is a trip mainly by public transportation that takes you out of Oslo across the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, down to Flaam by an interesting stretch of railway, out on the fjords for a while, back on a bus steep up the mountains again and back to Oslo on the train. I don't intend to be ironic, because it's a very nice trip that gets rave reviews by visitors. However, doing this in one day is a definite tourist-trappy thing that leaves you in the hands of commercial undertakings only and no way you can experience anything on your own ar your own "free will" and inclination.

If you have the urge to do it in one day it's still better than rotting in Oslo. If the weather is bad in Oslo you can be nearly sure it's nice on the west coast fjord areas.

Try to stay overnight, or turn the trip into a multi-day travel, take in more fjords, mountains, hidden places, visit places you fancy from the look of it on a map etc. And end in Bergen - if the weather is nice. From there you can return to Oslo with my permission...

This tourist trap is fun, you just don't travel around herded like goats or sheep. If the weather forcast is bad, look somewhere else to go- Many places in Norway can gove you a similar experience, but the tourist organisations, hotel directors and their marketing may be less well organized and clever.

  • The natural or man-made wonder roadside sign - Norway
    The natural or man-made
    wonder roadside sign
    by evaanna
This roadside sign can be encountered all over Norway and is supposed to mark natural and man-made wonders. While in many cases it does, in even more it means a long detour to see something like a small zoo or a path across the country that you would normally enjoy to take a walk along but not when your destination is still hundreds of kilometres ahead. In such cases it becomes just an annoying and unnecessary diversion that could have been avoided be it not for the sign.

Be critical, don't follow all the signs, learn in advance what there is to be seen along your route and keep to the plan. You will still come across the unexpected, but it's for you to decide if you want to spend your precious time on it or not.

    Prices

  • Norway must be one of the most expensive countries in the world ... even in rural areas, you can expect to pay a fortune while shopping for the basic necessities in the supermarket. Prepare for outrageous prices when eating out. That said, you can find decent accomodation at a reasonable price, and driving/gas is not overly expensive, too. The same prices go for Norwegians, too, so it is not a tourist rip-off but a general thing.

The high cost of living should not keep you from going to Norway. Think that you pay for the wonderful location. Try to live on fresh fruit for some time, it is good for your health!

    The "Golden Route"
    by Saagar
"The Golden Route" in its commercial version takes you from Oslo up the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, the Romsdalen valley to Åndalsnes by train, by bus onwards up the Trollstigen road, past Tafjord, then the Eagle Road down into the Geiranger Fjord. From Geiranger by bus onwards to Stryin via Dalsnibba viewpoint, past Lom and Otta where you again board the train for Oslo. All very nice, but what's the hurry?
The Golden Route is like the Norway in a Nutshell trying to take you through a cross-section of Norway's landscapes by public transport.
There are also charter trips the same route.

The landscape is great along this route, so try to spend some more time in each place. Some of the potential stopping points could be excellent starting points for mountain hiking, too.

Before you go, check the weather... Great weather in Oslo shouldn't tempt you into going as the weather on the north-east coast tends to the opposite of that of Oslo's.

The Olympics were exciting and there was a big effort to preserve the town and surroundings but the real beauty of Norway is the natural beauty of the landscape and its people.
